Victoria Named A Host City For Gold Cup

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association, in conjunction with the Football Confederation, today announced that Victoria, BC, will serve as one of the four host cities for the Women’s Gold Cup 2002, the championship for women’s national teams in the Football Confederation from October 27 to November 9.



The second edition of the continental championship will also serve as FC qualifying for the FIFA 2003 Women’s World Cup, to be held in the People’s Republic of China from September 28 to October 18, 2003.

Ottawa, Ontario – L’Association canadienne de soccer et la Football Confederation ont annoncé aujourd’hui que la ville de Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique sera une des quatre villes hôtes du tournoi féminin de la Gold Cup 2002, qui se déroulera du 27 octobre au 9 novembre et qui déterminera les championnes continentales de la Football Confederation.



La deuxième édition de ce championnat continental servira aussi de tournoi de qualification pour la FC en vue de la Coupe du monde féminine de la FIFA, qui se déroulera en Chine du 28 septembre au 18 octobre 2003.

Osieck Announces Roster For Swiss Friendly

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team head coach Holger Osieck today announced the 16-man roster for the international friendly against Switzerland on May 15 in St. Gallen, Switzerland.



The roster includes goalkeeper Pat Onstad, who has fully recovered from a wrist injury and is rejoining the national team for the first time since the Confederations Cup. Also named to the squad is Jeff Clarke, who was on the 22-man roster at the Confederations Cup but did not play. He is currently playing with the A-League’s Vancouver Whitecaps.

Canada vs Norway Tickets Now On Sale

Tickets for Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team’s game against Norway (presented by adidas) are now available through the Ontario Soccer Association in person, by calling 1-905-264-9390 EXT: 221 or by email at: tickets@soccer.on.ca. Tickets are $15.00 for individuals and $10.00 for groups of 10 or more. Canada will play the 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, Ontario on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. The OSA is located at The Soccer Centre, 7601 Martin Grove Rd., Vaughan, Ontario.



The game will have added significance for Canadian head coach Even Pellerud, who in 1995 won the Women’s World Cup with Norway.

Fleming Named To CONCACAF Hall of Fame

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased and proud to announce President Jim Fleming has been named to the CONCACAF Hall of Fame and will be inducted in a special ceremony on April 19 in Miami prior to the CONCACAF Congress.



Mr. Fleming is a highly-respected figure in the international soccer community and his accomplishments on behalf of Canadian soccer and in the CONCACAF confederation are extensive. It has been under his leadership that Canada has enjoyed its greatest success on the world soccer stage, notably its participation in the 1986 World Cup and Canada’s Gold Cup triumph in 2000.

Canada Finishes France Tournament With a 3-2 Loss

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team today lost their final match of the Tournoi international de France, dropping a 3-2 decision against Japan. Canada’s loss allowed France to win the tournament by defeating Australia 1-0 and finishing with two wins and one loss. The Canadians wrapped up the competition with a 1-1-1 record, tying for second place with Japan.



Canada came under pressure due to an early Japanese goal by Sakai in the fifth minute. Canada fought hard to come back but did not reach the same level of intensity reached during their 2-0 win against France on Saturday.

Le Canada conclut le Tournoi de France avec un revers

Ottawa, Ontario – L’équipe canadienne féminine de Coupe du monde a disputé son dernier match au Tournoi international de France, subissant une défaite de 3 à 2 contre le Japon. Cette défaite permet à la France de remporter le tournoi suite à un gain de 1 à 0 sur l’Australie, ce qui lui donne un dossier de deux victoires et une défaite. Le Canada termine la compétition avec une fiche de 1-1-1, à égalité avec le Japon pour le deuxième rang.

CSA Endorses Total Player Development Program

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association has announced its endorsement of a grassroots player and coaching education program that has been developed by former Canadian World Cup and Olympic coach, Tony Waiters. “Total Player Development” (TPD), has been developed over a 15-year period and has been designed to make Youth Soccer a positive experience for each and every child — from the time that they enter the sport, until they progress to a higher level.
