Experience has served Canada well

Canada’s men’s national team has performed well at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Through the group phase, Canada is undefeated and confident before its quarter-final stage match against Honduras this 18 July in Philadelphia. The team traveled from Miami to Philadelphia on Saturday 11 July after finishing first in Group A.



This Saturday’s Canada-Honduras match will be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet (all four channels; 17.00 ET / 14.00 PT). The winner of the quarter-final match advances to the semi-final stage on 23 July in Chicago.

Quarter-final coaches meet in Philadelphia

CONCACAF introduced the four head coaches whose national teams will meet this Saturday 18 July in Philadelphia in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final stage. Stephen Hart of Canada, Reinaldo Rueda of Honduras, Gary Stempel of Panama and Bob Bradley of USA were all on hand at Lincoln Financial Field to preview the Canada-Honduras and USA-Panama matches.



“This is the first time in the CONCACAF Gold Cup that we are fortunate enough to be here in Philadelphia,” said CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer. “We have some really wonderful games that will be played here.”

Rogers Sportsnet to feature quarter-final clash

Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast Canada’s quarter-final match this Saturday 18 July from the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada’s match will broadcast live on all four Sportsnet channels at 17.00 ET / 14.00 PT. The Canada-Honduras match is the first of four quarter-final matches at this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.



Canada reached the quarter-final stage after finishing first in Group A with seven points in three games. Canada won 1:0 over Jamaica on 3 July in Los Angeles, won 1:0 over El Salvador on 7 July in Columbus, and drew 2:2 with Costa Rica on 10 July in Miami. All three Canada games were broadcast live on Sportsnet.

Canada begins training in Philadelphia

Canada’s men’s national team enjoyed its first day of training today in Philadelphia, PA. The team will have five sessions this week before Saturday night’s quarter-final match against Honduras at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada qualified for the quarter-final stage after finishing first in Group A in the preliminary round.



All 19 players were in gear for today’s practice at the University of Pennsylvania. Coach Stephen Hart and his staff had the team for just over 90 minutes on the grass pitch.

Group competition concludes at CONCACAF Gold Cup

Canada’s men’s national team has traveled to Philadelphia where it will take part in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final stage in less than a week. The team arrived Saturday, but did not train on Sunday after a busy schedule that saw the team play in three different venues in eight days.



On Sunday night, the last four teams completed the group phase of the 2009 competition. In Group C action, Mexico won 2:0 over Guadeloupe while Panama won 4:0 over Grenada. Mexico claimed first place in the group while Panama claimed the eighth and final quarter-final position for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Canada to face Honduras

Canada’s men’s national team learned tonight of its opponent for next week’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final stage. Canada will face Honduras in the first of four quarter-final matches this 18-19 July. Canada’s quarter-final match will be played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA.



Honduras qualified for the quarter-final stage tonight on the final day of Group B action. USA finished first after it pulled off a 2:2 draw with Haiti. USA scored in the 92nd minute to earn the single point. Honduras, meanwhile, won its match 4:0 over Grenada.

Canada finishes first in Group A

Canada’s men’s national team will advance to the quarter-final stage after finishing first in Group A at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada finished first with seven points in three games in the opening phase of the biennial confederation championship.



Canada moves to Philadelphia tomorrow to await the second-place team from Group B (USA, Honduras, Haiti or Grenada). Canada’s quarter-final match will be played on 18 July at Lincoln Financial Field.

Canada qualifies for quarter-final stage

Canada’s men’s national team officially qualified for the quarter-final stage of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup tonight. Both Canada (Group A leader) and USA (Group B leader) qualified after Panama and Mexico drew 1:1 in Houston, TX. Even if Canada or USA falls to third place in their respective groups, the Group C third-place team will not be able to catch either team.



Guadeloupe actually moved into first place in Group C with a 2:0 win over Nicaragua. Guadeloupe is in first place with six points, followed by Mexico (four points), Panama (one point) and Nicaragua (no points). Guadeloupe has also qualified for the quarter-final stage as it will either finish first or second in Group C.

Canada arrives in Miami

Canada’s men’s national team arrived safely in Miami, FL today after taking a three-point lead in Group A of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. After a 1:0 win over El Salvador in Columbus on Tuesday night, Canada traveled to Miami on Wednesday to begin preparations for its next game against Costa Rica.



“I thought yesterday we put it together for both halves,” said coach Stephen Hart. “We created some chances, in particular in the second half. Overall, you have to be pleased with the way the players have been performing.”
