Canada’s women’s national team will face Russia on Tuesday for first place in Group B at the 2009 Cyprus Women’s Cup. Canada needs a win to ensure its place in the 12 March final. Canada is leading Group B with four points and a +1 goal differential after two games in the round-robin action. Russia and Netherlands each have three points, but Russia sits in second with a +1 goal differential. New Zealand is in last with just one point.
“We would like to find some continuity in the team,” said coach Carolina Morace who is looking to build on her first win as coach of Canada. “It is important that we keep our concentration during the match. As the leaders of Group B, I think the team has more confidence and strength as we go into the last match.”

North American nations learned the host cities for this year’s 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States. Thirteen different cities will host the confederation championship – one for each day of matches. The 2009 Gold Cup runs 3-26 July.
The final schedule and groups’ draw will be announced at a later date. The 12 teams participating are Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and USA.
Amy Walsh has become the fifth Canadian player to make 100 appearances for the national team. The Canadian midfielder reached the century mark this afternoon in a
2:1 win over Netherlands at the 2009 Cyprus Women’s Cup.
“It feels good to reach 100 appearances,” says Walsh. “I feel it’s been a long time coming with a couple injuries. It’s very special to share the moment with a core group of girls that I have played with for a long time.”
Carolina Morace and her staff earned their first win with the Canadian women’s national team in a 2:1 victory over Netherlands today.
The victory came in her second match at the 2009 Cyprus Women’s Cup as the team jumped into first place in Group B standings.
Midfielder Amy Walsh, meanwhile, became the fifth player to make her 100th appearance for Canada while captain Christine Sinclair scored her 96th and 97th career goals.

Canada’s women’s national team has announced it will play Japan in an international friendly at BMO Field in Toronto this coming 25 May 2009. The match, presented by Winners, will be Canada’s first at home since reaching the quarter-final stage at last year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. More importantly, it will mark new head coach Carolina Morace’s home debut with the Canadian team.

A new era for the Canadian women’s national team was launched today as Canada drew 1:1 with New Zealand in their first match of the 2009 Cyprus Cup. Christina Julien opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an excellent finish. New Zealand answered in the 34th minute through Betsy Hassett’s strike. Both teams had chances to win the game but were not able to finish.
“I am happy with the performance of the team after not playing for five months. For me the match went very, very well as the players on the other team are playing every week, said coach Carolina Morace following the match. “I am pleased with the team effort as they tried to do what I asked of them. We will build on this performance.”
