Canada has been drawn into a Group E at the official draw for the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in China. Canada has been draw into a group with Argentina, Sweden (Sverige) and hosts China.
“I am quite pleased with a reasonable draw,” says coach Even Pellerud. “Of course, it will be a challenge to play the host (China), but I am happy we don’t play them in the first match.”
Twenty-eight sides discovered the hurdles they will have to overcome to reach the second round in this year’s Olympic Football Tournaments when the official draw took place today in Beijing, the capital of China PR. The line-up for the group stage of the global competition, which will be staged in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao from 6 to 23 August, threw up pairings that are interesting and exciting in equal measure.
In the women’s event, China were grouped with Sweden and Canada, who knocked them out in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003, while the defending champion US have been drawn together with 2000 Olympic champions Norway, alongside Asia’s emerging power Japan and New Zealand. Two-time world champions Germany will not have it easy, either, with Korea DPR and Brazil set to test them.

« Je suis plutôt content de ce tirage au sort raisonnable, a déclaré l’entraîneur-chef de l’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior, Even Pellerud. Bien sûr, ce sera un grand défi pour nous de devoir affronter le pays hôte (la Chine), mais je suis quand même heureux que nous ne l’affronterons pas au cours du premier match du tournoi. »
Les vingt-huit équipes qualifiées pour les deux Tournois Olympiques de Football connaissent depuis ce dimanche la difficulté de leur tâche, à l’issue du tirage au sort officiel qui a eu lieu à Pékin, capitale de la RP Chine. Le premier tour de la grande joute internationale se disputera, du 6 au 23 août, sur les pelouses de Pékin, Shanghai, Tianjin, Qinhuangdao et Shenyang. Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, le tirage la réservé quelques affiches aussi passionnantes que indécises.
Chez les femmes, le tirage a accouché de la revanche de la dernière Coupe du Monde Féminine de la FIFA avec l’Allemagne opposée au Brésil dans le groupe F. Autre affiche au programme de la phase des poules, l’affrontement programmé dans le groupe G entre deux nations favorites, les USA et la Norvège.

Comme on s’y attendait, les Américaines ont confirmé leur hégémonie sur le Nouveau Monde : elles se sont emparées d’un nouveau titre régional samedi, au terme des qualifications de la CONCACAF pour le Tournoi Olympique 2008, qui se sont déroulées à Juarez, au Mexique. Si elles n’ont fait qu’une bouchée de leurs adversaires en phase de groupes et en demies, il leur a fallu aller aux tirs au but pour faire plier le Canada, lui aussi qualifié pour Pékin, lors d’une finale spectaculaire.
Après s’être imposées sans forcer sur la Jamaïque et le Mexique dans le Groupe A, avec un total de neuf buts inscrits contre un seul encaissé, les Stars and Stripes ont retenu leur place pour le grand rendez-vous d’août en balayant le Costa Rica en demi-finale jeudi (3:1).

Just two days after the two sides met in the CONCACAF final, Canada and the United States have announced they will meet in an international friendly in Washington, DC. The Americans have invited Canada’s women’s national team to their capital city for a 10 May friendly at RFK Stadium (19.00 local kick off).
Canada and the United States recently played to a 1:1 draw in the 12 April CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament final. The U.S. finished first in the tournament after winning 6-5 on penalties. Three nights earlier on 9 April, both Canada and the United States qualified for Summer Olympics by winning their semi-final matches in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico.
USA did what was expected of them at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2008 Women’s Olympic Tournament, roaring to yet another regional title to reaffirm their dominance in the New World. After making easy meat of their opponents in the group stage and their crucial semi, the Stars and Stripes needed penalties to slip past Canada, who also qualify for Beijing, in an entertaining final on Saturday.
After cruising through Group A in Juarez, Mexico with two wins over Jamaica and the hosts, scoring nine goals and conceding only one in the process, the US secured their place in Beijing this August thanks to another comprehensive 3-1 win in their semi-final against Costa Rica on Thursday.
