Hooper Makes FIFA Shortlist

Zurich – The 14th FIFA World Player Gala in co-operation with FIFPro will be held at the Zurich Opera House on December 20, 2004. As the ceremony rounding off twelve months of FIFA Centennial festivities, this Gala will have a very distinctive flavour. The majestic backdrop of the Zurich Opera House will imbue the special occasion with a unique tone. But its singularity will not be limited to the elements of time and place. The voting procedure for this year’s player awards has also been revised. In future, the vote will be conducted on the basis of lists drawn up by international football experts. Twenty-one female players have thus been nominated by the Committee for Women’s Football and FIFA Women’s Competitions as well as by specialist members of other FIFA committees whereas a list of thirty-five male players has been drawn up by the Football Committee and the Technical and Development Committee.

Within the framework of its Centennial celebrations, FIFA has decided to confer the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit on two of the greatest personalities to grace the beautiful game, Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer. Both football legends will therefore officially receive together the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Thursday, 23 September 2004 at 11.00, in presence of FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, FIFA General Secretary Dr Urs Linsi and the members of the FIFA Football Committee, which gathers together former world-class male and female football players.

Colin Jose Earns Media Award

The National Soccer Hall of Fame is proud to announce the establishment of the Colin Jose Media Award to recognize members of the media who have made significant contributions to the game throughout their writing and/or broadcasting careers. “The media in all its forms play a significant role in the growth of the game,” Hall of Fame President/CEO Will Lunn stated. “The Hall of Fame is determined to recognize the best of these men and women. It is also with great pride that the Hall of Fame names this award for noted journalist and historian Colin Jose, who has done so much to report and record the history of soccer in North America!” “ This award is something I believe is an important step for soccer,” Colin Jose said. “However, the idea that the Board of Directors would chose to name it for me never crossed my mind. Writing about the game has always been close to my heart, not my career, and it was it’s own reward for me. There are many others for whom this Award could have been named – What an honor!”
