Timko Earns adidas Golden Shoe

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Brittany Timko of Coquitlam, BC has earned the adidas Golden Shoe as top scorer at the 2004 FIFA Women’s Under-19 World Championship in Thailand with seven goals in four games despite Canada’s early departure from the tournament following a 3-1 loss to China in the quarterfinal played on Saturday, November 21. Germany’s Anja Mittag was unable to score in the final in which her team took gold after defeating China 2-0 today in Bangkok, Thailand. Mittag ended the tournament with six goals in six games, one short of Timko. The United States earned bronze today after posting a 3:0 win over Brazil in the earlier match of today’s double header. Christine Sinclair won the Golden Boot award with 10 goals in six games in the inaugural FIFA Women’s Under-19 World Championship hosted by Canada in 2002. Sinclair was also awarded the Tournament MVP in 2002.

Coquitlam To Remember Mobilio

Coquitlam City Soccer will be remembering Dominic Mobilio at a memorial service on Friday November 19th, 7:30, at Fatima Church, 315 Walker St., Coquitlam. Any pictures or memorabilia of Domenic will be gratefully accepted and incorporated into a display at the church and then moved to a permanent location at the CCS equipment depot. An “open mike” will form part of the service and players, coaches, parents and friends are encouraged to share a memory about Domenic. Rosenlund Named To All-Big West Second Team

Canadian midfielder, Tyler Rosenlund (Port Coquitlam, BC) was named to the All-Big West Second Team for his play at top-ranked UC Santa Barbara. Rosenlund was just one of four freshman with UCSB to be recognized by Big West after finishing tied for sixth in the conference with five assists. He also scored two goals during the regular season.

Yallop To Be Inducted Into The Soccer Hall of Fame

Current national team coach Frank Yallop is one of eleven new members who will be inducted into The Soccer Hall of Fame in Vaughan, Ontario on April 30, 2005, it was announced today. Yallop, who is being inducted as a player, joins former national team coaches Don Petrie and Tony Waiters in the Hall. Also being inducted next April are former national team players Colin Miller, Wes McLeod, Terry Moore, Garry Ayre, Norman McLeod and Michelle Ring, Making up the eight players being inducted is former England international Sam Chedgzoy, who played and coached in Montreal from 1930 to 1940 and continued to live in Montreal after he retired. The three builders being inducted are Steve Stavro, who was president of the Toronto City Soccer Club in the old Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League, former FIFA referee Sonia Denoncourt, and Georges Schwartz, a former member of the FIFA Amateur Committee, who has been prominent in Quebec soccer for many years. In addition the Hall of Fame has chosen its third Team of Distinction, this time the Westminster Royals of 1928, who were national champions in that year.

Pozniak Replaces Valente On Roster

Canadian Men’s World Cup team Head Coach Frank Yallop has selected Chris Pozniak to join the team in Guatemala for Wednesday’s World Cup Qualifier. Pozniak will replace midfielder Alfredo Valente. Yallop attended the MLS Cup Final in Los Angeles today and will join the team in Guatemala this evening. The team will train together at 4:00 p.m. in Guatemala City on Monday.

Yallop Announces Roster For Game Against Guatemala on November 17

Ottawa, Ontario– Canadian Men’s World Cup Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 16-player roster for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Guatemala on November 17 in Guatemala City, Guatemala (8:15 p.m. local time). The Canadians were eliminated from qualifying for the 2006 World Cup following a 3-1 loss to Costa Rica on October 13 and Yallop will use the upcoming game to begin the process of developing the team that will attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Guatemala has already qualified for the Final Round of CONCACAF Qualifying. “Obviously everyone is very disappointed that we have been eliminated from advancing but this game is by no means meaningless. It will provide a number of players with an opportunity to start a game against a CONCACAF country on the road,” said Yallop. “We have to start looking at players who can help us in qualifying in 2008 and that process starts now – several young players are going to get the chance to show me what they can do.”

The New Stadium at York University: A sports facility in the heart of the GTA

TORONTO, October 18, 2004 – York University announced today that an agreement has been reached for the construction of a new 25,000-seat stadium on the York University Keele campus. The stadium will be the new home of the Toronto Argonauts and a world-class venue for Canadian soccer, and will host the FIFA Men’s Under-20 World Youth Championship in the summer of 2007.
The new stadium, which will become part of the regional athletic centre being created on York’s campus, will play a significant role in the Canadian Soccer Association’s (CSA) hosting of the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championship, which will be played in six Canadian cities. The Championship has a budget of approximately $30 million, almost half of which will be spent in Toronto.

“This $70 million project is an example of successful co-operation between governments, York University, amateur and professional sports,” said the Hon. Joe Volpe, federal Minister Responsible for the Greater Toronto Area, (GTA), who confirmed that the federal government will be contributing $27 million toward the cost of the new stadium.

CANADIAN FORCES ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE HONOURED

OTTAWA – This Saturday, October 16, the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency (CFPSA) will celebrate the athletic achievement of CF members at the 16th Annual CF Sports Awards Ceremony. Themed Unsung Heroes – The Heart of CF Sports, this event honours athletes, coaches and officials in 10 categories. Sonia Denoncourt, the first female international Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) referee who was recently appointed as one of only 25 FIFA Instructors, will be the guest speaker. Ms. Denoncourt has a passion for soccer and has left her mark in the history books, refereeing men’s professional games in Brazil, El Salvador, USA and Canada. Although recently retired after 27 years, Ms. Denoncourt is currently a Referee Development Coordinator with The Canadian Soccer Association.
