Yallop Announces Roster for Friendly vs Spain

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s National Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 18-player roster for the upcoming international friendly against Spain on Saturday, September 3. The game will be played in Santander with a 9:45 p.m. kickoff (local time).

“This is another big game for us,” said Yallop. “You want to measure yourself against the top teams in the World and obviously Spain are a soccer power. It will be good to get together again so soon after the Gold Cup and to have a few days to prepare for what will be a real challenge for us but one we are eagerly looking forward to.”

Yallop continues to use friendlies as an opportunity to see different players and the Spain game is no exception with midfielder Rocco Placentino earning his first senior call-up. A member of Canada’s last Olympic team, Placentino moved in the off-season from Italian Serie C side Cavese to Serie B’s Arezzo, who subsequently sent him on loan to Gualdo in Serie C.

The Canadians will play the first international friendly against the Germans on Thursday, September 1 at 7pm at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC (presented by TELUS) before travelling to Edmonton to conclude the series on Sunday, September 4 at 2pm at Commonwealth Stadium (presented by CIBC). All times listed are local.

“We are very excited about returning home to play these games,” said Canadian Head Coach Even Pellerud. “It has been awhile since the team has had a chance to play in front of our home fans and they are really looking forward to the challenge of playing the World Champions.”

“Germany always fields their top team and this German squad will be no different. The fans will also get to see, in my opinion, some wonderful match-ups – (Randee) Hermus and (Sasha) Andrews versus Birgit Prinz; and (Diana) Matheson against the world-class German midfield.”

The search for Cochrane’s replacement will commence immediately.

Canada To Play Spain and Luxembourg

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association announced today its Men’s World Cup Team will play friendlies against Spain and Luxembourg this fall. The Canadians will travel to Spain to take on the Spanish (currently No. 9 in the FIFA rankings) on Saturday, September 3. Canada will also head back to Europe to play Luxembourg on November 16. Both games are to be played on international dates.

“Obviously Spain represents another very difficult opponent,” said Canadian head coach Frank Yallop who yesterday returned from the Gold Cup where Canada finished with a 1-2 record after posting a 2-1 win over Cuba on Tuesday. “Playing against these strong teams will help us as we look to the future of the program. We are trying to get a balance between playing in Europe which is easier for our players and the need to play more games at home in our region.”

“I was pleased overall with our performances at the Gold Cup and I feel we were unlucky to not get through to the quarter-finals. If we had finished off a few more of the chances that we created then we would be in Houston right now preparing to play Mexico. The Spain game will allow us the opportunity to keep looking at potential players and see if they can handle stepping up another level.”

Canada and USA Continue Their 80-year Rivalry

Seattle, WA, USA – It always seems that when a Canadian and an American team play each other, regardless of the gender, sport, or age, the atmosphere is a tad more electric.

That should be the feeling this afternoon in Seattle’s Qwest Field when Canada and the USA meet in the second match of their 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign.

The meeting will be the twenty-eighth time (more than any other opponent – Mexico is second with 23) these cross-border rivals have met with the Americans holding the slight edge in the series. Canada’s all-time record vs. the USA is 9 wins, 7 draws, and 11 losses.
