Canadian senior men face Estonia on Wednesday

Canada’s men’s national team is currently in Tallinn, Estonia preparing for its international friendly on Wednesday 26 March. The match will be played at A.Le Coq Arena (Lilleküla Stadium) starting at 18.00 (local kickoff).



The Canada-Estonia match will be televised on Setanta Sports Canada and webcast on CBCSports.ca. The match will be broadcast live (12.00 ET / 9.00 PT).

Canadian women hold ninth place in world rankings

Canada’s women’s national team has held its ninth-place position in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. The Canucks have held their position since 2007. Canada is also the second-ranked country in the CONCACAF region. Their confederation rivals, the United States, recently switched places with Deutschland for first overall.



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.

CONCACAF releases provisional rosters

Canada’s women’s national team announced their provisional roster today for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in the México. With less than two weeks to go before CONCACAF’s tournament begins in Ciudad Juarez, coach Even Pellerud has identified 30 players that are eligible to participate in the six-team tournament.



Pellerud has up until 31 March to announce his final 20-player roster. He is not bound to the 30-player list, so he will be able to select any available players. Pellerud will also be able to make changes for medical reasons. Canada is expected to announce its roster sometime after the team’s return from Europe.

Canada révèle son effectif provisoire

L’équipe nationale canadienne féminine a aujourd’hui révélé l’effectif provisoire appelé à participer au tournoi qualificatif de la CONCACAF, qui aura lieu au Mexique et permettra à deux pays de la région d’obtenir leur billet pour les Jeux Olympiques d’été. À quelques deux semaines du match d’ouverture du tournoi à l’Estadio Olímpico Benito Juarez de Ciudad Juarez, l’entraîneur-chef Even Pellerud a sélectionné 30 joueurs qui pourraient participer à ce tournoi réunissant six équipes.



Pellerud a jusqu’au 31 mars pour annoncer son effectif final de 20 joueurs. Il n’est pas obligé de se limiter à la liste de trente joueurs et pourra donc sélectionner tout joueur disponible. Pellerud pourra également effectuer des remplacements au sein de l’effectif pour les raisons médicaux.

Association appoints Stephen Hart as new technical director

The Canadian Soccer Association announced today that Stephen Hart has been named the Association’s new technical director. Hart will lead Canada’s long-term development plan as well as oversee all technical program. Hart has been technical director for Soccer Nova Scotia and a long-time coach with Canada’s national teams.
“This is a challenge to which I am looking forward,” says Stephen Hart. “I hope we can introduce some measure of stability and consistency into Canada’s technical programs. To impact the game in this country, it will take the commitment of everyone involved. It is amazing what can be achieved when we all work together.”

Canada announces roster for Estonia friendly

Canada’s men’s national team announced the roster today for their international friendly match with Estonia. The Canadian players will start to arrive on Sunday, a few days before their 26 March match on Wednesday in Tallinn. This will be Canada’s senior team’s second international match of the year.



“It has been good to see the that most of our European based players have been getting a game each weekend with their professional clubs during the winter. This International date is a prime opportunity to get them together as a group. We will need to organize ourselves quickly on Monday and Tuesday before facing a very competitive Estonia team on Wednesday evening.”

Association wraps up weekend in Ottawa

The Canadian Soccer Association wrapped up another productive weekend of meetings, this time in the nation’s capital of Ottawa, ON. The weekend meetings included both an executive meeting on the Friday and a Board of Directors meeting which ran Saturday and Sunday.
Amongst a number of issues that were discussed throughout the weekend were the Association’s two current priorities, the new strategic plan and the hiring of two senior staff members – technical director and general secretary. The strategy includes implementation of a new long-term development plan called Wellness to World Cup.

Canada’s women’s national team will play their fifth and final match on their European trip today at the Stade Robert-Bobin in Bondoufle, France. The Canadian women will face fellow top-10 nation France in an international friendly match at 18.30 local time.



Earlier this week, the women’s national team won the 2008 Cyprus Cup after wrapping up a perfect 3-0 schedule on the eastern Mediterranean island. Canada won 2:1 over Russia (5 March), 3:0 over Japan (7 March), and 3:2 over the United States’ youth team (12 March). Canadian captain Christine Sinclair won the tournament scoring title with five goals in three games. In between Cyprus Cup games, Canada lost a friendly 0:2 to Scotland.

Au courant de la semaine, l’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior a remporté l’édition 2008 de la Coupe de Chypre, enregistrant trois victoires pour terminer le tournoi avec une fiche cumulative parfaite de 3-0-0. Dans le cadre majestueux de l’île de la Méditerranée, le Canada a battu la Russie par un score de 2 à 1 (le 5 mars) avant de dominer le Japon par un score de 3 à 0 (le 7 mars) et de s’imposer sur l’équipe nationale américaine junior, cinq jours plus tard, grâce à un résultat de 3 à 2. Le capitaine canadien Christine Sinclair a remporté le soulier d’or du tournoi grâce à ses cinq buts inscrits en trois matchs. Entre ses matchs de la Coupe de Chypre, le Canada s’est incliné devant l’Écosse (0 à 2) au cours d’un match international amical.
