Match Report

Canada qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 with a 7:0 victory over Panama at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship. Christine Sinclair scored her first of two near the end of the first half before Canada exploded for six more goals in the final 45 minutes, with Jessie Fleming, Janine Beckie, Rebecca Quinn and Adriana Leon (two) all writing their names on the scoresheet. Nichelle Prince recorded three assists, Stephanie Labbé posted the clean sheet, and Fleming earned Player of the Match honours.
 
Of note, Diana Matheson became the second player to make her 200th appearance for Canada.
 
BY THE NUMBERS:
Canada’s statistical leaders were Janine Beckie, Adriana Leon and Nichelle Prince with four shots each and Sophie Schmidt with 72 passes (on 79 pass attempts) and five steals. Canada fired 25 shots (18 of which were on target), connected for 487 of 538 pass attempts (91%), won 18 steals, and held 71% possession over Panama. Behind Schmidt, Rebecca Quinn completed 67 of 70 pass attempts, Ashley Lawrence completed 51 of 55 pass attempts, and Kadeisha Buchanan completed 48 of 49 pass attempts. Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé posted the clean sheet, but did not have to make any saves in the victory.

Canada’s starting lineup featured Stephanie Labbé in goal, Ashley Lawrence at right back, Kadeisha Buchanan and Rebecca Quinn at centre back, Allysha Chapman at left back, and Sophie Schmidt, Julia Grosso, Diana Matheson, Jessie Fleming, Janine Beckie, and Christine Sinclair from the midfield up through to the attack.
 
In the second half, coach Kenneth Heiner-Møller replaced Grosso with Nichelle Prince (46’), Buchanan with Shelina Zadorsky (64’), and Sinclair with Adriana Leon (68’).
 
Panama’s starting lineup featured Farissa Córdoba, Onelys Alvarado, captain Yomira Pinzón, Rebeca Espinosa, Maryorie Pérez, María Montenegro, Aldrith Quintero, Laurie Batista, Kenia Rangel, Karla Riley, and Lineth Cedeño.
 
In the secord half, coach Víctor Suárez replaced Riley with Marta Cox (46’), Montenegro with Natalia Mills (46’), and Rangel with Erika Hernández (63’).
