Match Report

Canada’s Women’s National Team scored first, but hosts Brazil replied three times in a 3:1 victory in the Grand Final of the Torneio Internacional de Natal. All four goals were scored in the second half of the last women’s international match of the 2015 calendar year.

Janine Beckie was the Canadian goal scorer in the 46th minute, replied by Andressa Alves less than a minute later (47'). Centre back Mônica scored twice on headers following Brazilian corner kicks from either side (63', 80').

For Beckie, it was her third international goal of her young career.

In the first half, both sides had chances, with Brazil hitting the post twice and Canada’s opportunity cleared from the goal line. Brazil’s first post rang in the 25th minute, with a Poliana left-footed shot from the right side kept out in Canada's favour.

In the 35th minute, shortly after starter Erin McLeod was injured and replaced, Christine Sinclair played Beckie up the right side on a terrific run. Beckie's shot was saved by a diving Bárbara, with the rebound falling to an opportune Diana Matheson on the left. Amazingly, a sliding Formiga made it back in time to clear the chance before the ball crossed the line.

In the sixth minute of added time, Beatriz fired a shot that rang the post for Brazil, but Allysha Chapman was there in a jiffy to clear the rebound.

Early in the second half, Beckie opened the scoring with a shot on the run down the left side. With Matheson's long ball falling past the Brazilian defence, Beckie was first on the ball after which she fired a right-footed blast past Bárbara.

Less than a minute later, though, Brazil equalised after a cross fell to Marta who took two chances to get the ball back in the middle. The Canadian defence stopped her once, but her second chance made it Andressa Alves who scored on her chance.

In celebration of the goal, Andressa Alves ran up a set of stairs to the edge of the crowd for a hug with family members (followed by a yellow card from the referee).

Just over a quarter of an hour later, Mônica scored her first of two goals on a header from a corner kick down the left side. Labbé had made a good save on a previous cross from the right side, but her tip over the bar resulted in the goal-scoring corner kick.

Another quarter of an hour later, Mônica made it 3-1 on another header from a corner kick, this time from the right side. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the match, it would be the last nail needed in securing the win.

With 10,643 fans in attendance at the Arena das Dunas, Brazil celebrated with the championship trophy and a set of gold medals. Canada, meanwhile, were awarded the second-place trophy and a set of silver medals while Mexico were awarded the third-place trophy and a set of bronze medals.
