Match Report

Canada fell 1:2 to hosts Brazil in the group finale at the Torneio Internacional de Natal, albeit already with the promise of a second encounter in the Sunday 20 December final. Andressa Alves (12') and Débinha (40') were the goal scorers for the hosts, while Josée Bélanger provided the lone reply for Canada.

With both sides already guaranteed a spot in the Sunday Final Match, the 16 December group finale was scheduled to determine the group standings. Brazil finished on top with nine points while Canada finished second with six points.

The opening goal came off a direct free kick just outside the Canadian box. Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé had just made a big save off Beatriz before Canada fouled their opponents on the clearance attempt just beyond the penalty area. Andressa Alves then curled a left-footed blast over the wall and into the top corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Labbé got her hands on the ball, but not quick enough to keep the ball out.

Brazil's second goal came off a Marta run down the left side in the 40th minute. After she penetrated into the Canadian box and drew two defenders to her attention, Marta slipped a pass into the middle of the box where Débinha pulled the trigger on Brazil's second goal. Both Labbé and centre back Kadeisha Buchanan had just collided on the play, leaving Débinha's effort unopposed for the 2-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, however, Canada drew one back on a similar play at the other end. This time, it was Christine Sinclair drawing the Brazilian defenders on the left side before slipping a pass to the onrushing Josée Bélanger. Into the break, Brazil's lead was cut in half.

It was Bélanger's second goal of the year and seventh of her international career.

Bélanger's goal, however, would be the last of the game as Canada couldn't create an equaliser in the second half. Brazil also had chances, but a Marta kick in the 53rd minute curled wide and a Juliete shot in the 91st minute was stopped by Labbé and her defenders.
