Match Report

Canada won 4:0 over Trinidad and Tobago on the second day of the annual Torneio Internacional de Futebol Feminino, this year played at the Arena das Dunas in Natal, Brazil. Diana Matheson, Janine Beckie, Nichelle Prince and Christine Sinclair all scored for Canada, with the Sinclair goal tying Mia Hamm for second-most goals in women's international football (158 career goals).

Veteran Diana Matheson opening scoring in the 10th minute after 16-year old rookie Deanne Rose made the penetrating run down the left side. Inside the box, Rose turned and crossed her pass to Matheson; Matheson then beat Trinidad and Tobago's young goalkeeper Tenesha Palmer with a right-footed blast.

Less than a minute into the second half, striker Janine Beckie doubled the score after some nice combination work between Josée Bélanger and Rose. Bélanger then played the ball forward for Beckie who scored from inside the box.

From there, the goals did not come easily, with Canada's attacks stymied by the defensive play of Trinidad and Tobago. Finally in the 79th minute, Nichelle Prince was able to find some room and drive one home for Canada. From a Palmer goal kick, Christine Sinclair headed the ball to Prince, who then moved it wide to debutant Marie Levasseur. From down the left side, Levasseur's cross came back to Prince who fired the ball on target.

Reinvigorated by Prince's goal, Canada made another push towards the opposition net, this time resulting in the historic Sinclair goal.

Kadeisha Buchanan started the play by winning a turnover in the midfield. Quickly collected by Rebecca Quinn, the ball was moved up to an on-the-run Sinclair who then played it to Prince. From Prince, the ball went left to Tancredi who then passed it to Josée Bélanger. Skipping into the box, Bélanger crossed it back in the middle where master striker Sinclair drove it home for her 158th career goal.

While Canada won 4:0 over Trinidad and Tobago, hosts Brazil won 6:0 over Mexico (with Brazil's Marta scoring her 100th international goal). With the victory, Canada improved to 11 wins, two draws, and three losses in 16 international matches in 2015. The Canada-Trinidad and Tobago match was played in front of 6,428 fans.

Canada's starting XI featured Erin McLeod in goal, Josée Bélanger at right back, Rebecca Quinn and Shelina Zadorsky at centre back, Allysha Chapman at left back, Diana Matheson, Jessie Fleming, Desiree Scott, and Deanne Rose in the midfield, and Janine Beckie and captain Christine Sinclair up top.

In the second half, coach John Herdman replaced Zadorsky with Kennedy Faulknor (46'), Fleming with Nichelle Prince (46'), Chapman with Marie-Eve Nault (64'), Rose with debutant Marie Levasseur (64'), Beckie with Melissa Tancredi (64'), and Scott with Kadeisha Buchanan (69'). Upon right back Nault's entry, Bélanger switched to left back.

Trinidad and Tobago's starting XI featured Tenesha Palmer (goal), Mariah Shade, Anastacia Prescott, Arin King (captain), Khadidra Debesette, Karyn Forbes, Ahkeela Mollon, Afiya Matthias, Jennelle Cunningham, Maylee Attin-Johnson, and Janine Francois.

In the second half, coach Randy Waldrum replaced Matthias with Patrice Superville (60'), Cunningham with Shenelle Henry (72'), Attin-Johnson with Jo-Marie Lewis (79'), and Francois with Melissa Woo Ling (90').

Both Trinidad and Tobago's Matthias (37') and Canada's Buchanan (71') were cautioned by referee Alessandro Matos.

GOALKEEPER RECORD:
Erin McLeod made her 111th international appearance, a new record for Canadian goalkeepers that surpassed the previous mark held by Karina LeBlanc (110). McLeod also posted her 41st career clean sheet, which is only six back of LeBlanc's record of 47.
