Match Report

Canada’s women U-20 team has come within a point of reaching the semi-final stage of the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. With a 2:0 victory over Cuba, Canada has climbed into first place of Group A with six points. Costa Rica has moved into second place following a 3:0 victory over host Guatemala.

Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners, can advance to the semi-final stage with a win or draw on Sunday against host Guatemala. Only two teams will advance from the four-team group, yet three teams could still finish tied with six points. For that to happen, Costa Rica will need to beat Cuba and then Guatemala will need to beat Canada.

If all three teams were tied on six points, the tie-breaker scenario would be:

a) Greater number of Points in matches between the tied

teams (which in this case would be equal, as all three teams would have a win and a loss);

b) Greater Goal Difference in matches between the tied

teams (if more than two teams finish equal on points);

c) Greater number of goals scored in matches among the tied

teams (if more than two teams finish equal on points).

As such, Guatemala needs to beat Canada by at least two goals if it wishes to advance to the semi-final stage.

The Sunday Canada-Guatemala match will be played at 12.30 local time at the Estadio Cementos Progresso in Ciudad Guatemala. The match will be broadcast live on CONCACAF.com (13.30 ET / 10.30 PT). It will be the first-ever meeting between the two nations at the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. Including today’s win, Canada’s all-time record in this tournament is 16 wins and one loss. Canada has seven consecutive wins including today’s 2:0 victory over Cuba.
