Match Report

Canada combined a 0:0 draw with a 5-4 win on kicks from the penalty mark to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016. The drama ended with a Victoria Pickett right-footed kick that went into the bottom left corner of the net.

Bianca St-Georges, Vital Kats, Taylor Pryce, Mika Richards, and Pickett were the five Canadian scorers, with goalkeeper Rylee Foster stopping Mexico's second shooter Monica Flores.

It was a nervy finish after a 120 minutes of goalless play, even though Canada created some terrific chances in attack. The best was a 90th minute combination between Sarah Stratigakis and Taylor Pryce, with Pryce knocking her shot just wide.

At the other end following a Mexico corner kick, Marike Mousset was a defensive hero with a goal-line clearance in the first half. She was in the right spot at the right moment.

Also in the first half, Sarah Stratigakis fired a shot that went just high shortly after the half hour mark. In the second half, Alex Lamontagne had a shot go high after some nice play between Anyssa Ibrahim and Taylor Pryce.

Lamontagne had several good runs in the second half while, at the other end, the centre backs Bianca St-Georges and Mika Richards were rock solid.

Then at the end of the second half came that unexpected chance to Pryce, with the referee whistle blown just moments after the ball rolled wide.

In extra time, both teams were still working to penetrate, but the winning goal was not to be found. The final whistle was blown shortly after Canada's U-20 coach Daniel Worthington made his third and final substitution.

Canada’s starting XI featured Rylee Foster in goal, Sura Yekka at right back, Bianca St-Gerges and Mika Richards at centre back, Marike Mousset at left back, and Ashley Moreira, Taylor Pryce, Sarah Stratigakis, Sarah Kinzner, Shana Flynn, Alex Lamontage from the midfield up through to the attack.

Beyond the first half, coach Daniel Worthington replaced Kinzner with Anyssa Ibrahim (46'), Flynn with Victoria Pickett (91'), and Yekka with Vital Kats (120').

Mexico’s starting featured Emily Alvarado in goal, Moncia Flores at right back, Annia Mejia and Rebeca Bernal at centre back, Liliana Rodriguez at left back, and Vanessa Flores, Jacqueline Crowther, Eva Gonzalez, Maria Sanchez, Katty Martinez, and Kiana Palacios from the midfield up through to the attack.

In the second half, coach Roberto Medina replaced Martinez with Bianca Solis (77') and Jacqueline Crowther with Belen Cruz (82'). Also in the second half, Eva Gonzalez was booked with a caution (52').
