Match Report

Canada faced a determined host in Honduras, but successfully came away with first place after a 2:0 win in the group finale of the 2015 CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Sixteen-year old Sarah Stratigakis, wearing the captain's armband, scored both goals in the 8 December win at the Escuela Internacional Samprenada, the make-shift locale after inclement weather ruled out the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano for the second and third match days. The match was played in front of a vocal crowd of 305 spectators, with two new bleachers added for local students to watch the international match.

Stratigakis scored both goals less than 12 minutes apart, scoring one goal with either foot on crosses from deep right. The two goals gave Canada a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, but then they failed to beat a five-player Honduran defensive line to add to the margin.

At stake, the home side Honduras were chasing second place for a historic place in the CONCACAF semis - a first for the women's program at the youth level. So despite the loss with only two goals conceded, Honduras ‎stayed ahead of eliminated Jamaica in the group standings.

On the first Canada goal, just five minutes from the start of the match, Lamontagne cut back the ball to Stratigakis inside the box. She coolly took her pass and fired it left-footed past a diving Madelinne Nieto. The goalkeeper Nieto got her hand on it, but could not stop the shot from close range.

On the second goal in the 17th minute, it was an Emma Regan cross from the right touchline that Stratigakis volleyed past the goalkeeper Nieto. Sarah Kinzner, Sura Yekka, Shana Flynn, and Regan all had a touch of the ball before Stratigakis  one-timed her shot past Nieto.
