Match Report

Tosaint Ricketts scored late in the first half and Canada’s Men’s National Team added two more in the second half as they wrapped up their March camp with a convincing 3:0 victory over Puerto Rico on Monday night at the Estadio Juan Roman Loubriel in Bayamon, PUR.

Second half substitutes Randy Edwini-Bonsu and Cyle Larin each scored their first senior international goals for Canada, as they were never really troubled in their defensive end in front of very vocal Puerto Rican supporters.

Canada dominated much of the early going but couldn’t find the opener until late in the first half. Their best chance came off an early corner kick when Julian de Guzman smashed a Kyle Bekker corner kick off the post.

In the 42nd minute, they got the goal they deserved as defender David Edgar slid a nice pass to Maxim Tissot on the left side. He then crossed to Ricketts who faked a defender and scored his eighth career goal at the senior level.

Edwini-Bonsu was introduced into the game at the start of the second half and 15 minutes later he doubled Canada’s advantage.

Karl W. Ouimette brought the ball to the edge of the Puerto Rico penalty and then fed Edwini-Bonsu a pass that allowed him to skip past a defender and coolly slot the ball into the corner with his left foot.

Five minutes after the second goal, Larin was introduced and about 12 minutes after coming on, he got Canada’s third.

Having seen a shot blocked on the line moments earlier, Larin was in the right spot to bang in a cross from the right side from close range.

Canada now heads into World Cup Qualifying against Dominica in June on a bit of a roll. They’re unbeaten in three games and are 3-0-1 against CONCACAF opponents with Head Coach Benito Floro in charge.
