Match Report

It was a first win of 2015 for Canada as a Marcus Haber goal proved to be the winner in a 1:0 win over Guatemala at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla, on Friday.

Haber got the goal in the 11th minute off a well-worked corner kick as he used his height advantage in his favour in out-jumping the Guatemalan defence to head home the corner from Kyle Bekker.

It was a deserved goal as Canada had controlled a great deal of possession in the early going before going in front.

After the goal, however, chances were at a premium with Canada enjoying some possession but not in dangerous areas. Guatemala, meanwhile, wasn’t carving out much in the way of opportunities in the first half but did apply a bit more pressure as the half came to an end.

The conditions played havoc as the second half progressed with fierce winds becoming ever harder as the game drew to a close with a sudden deluge of rain occupying the final few minutes.

But there still were a few highlights as Marcus Haber had a penalty appeal waved off despite appearing to go down after his shirt was pulled in the penalty area.

Guatemala is known as a fierce counter-attacking team and immediately after Haber’s penalty appeal, the replied with a counter and had a shot come back off the post.

Later on, substitute Marco Pappa had a long-range curling effort helped on by a ferocious tail wind that smacked the top of the crossbar and out.
