Canada won 2:0 over Costa Rica on the second day of the 2016 CONCACAF Girls' Under-15 Championship in Orlando, FL, USA. Canada scored once on either side of the half-time whistle, with Sydney Kennedy and Jordyn Huitema both scoring their first goals of the competition.
The 10 August victory was Canada's second in as many days, with the team playing four group matches in five days from 9-13 August. Each match in the competition lasts 70 minutes.
FIRST HALF:
Costa Rica were on the attack from early part of the match. Canada stood up to the attack, but Costa Rica then won a free kick in a dangerous position in the 8th minute. Jeimy Umaña played it short to Maria Paula Salas and she blasted her shot off the Canadian crossbar.
From a lot of back and forth soccer in the morning heat, Canada scored the opener in the 24th minute. Sydney Kennedy made a couple of moves into the box and then roofed it over goalkeeper Fabiana Solano for the 1-0 lead.
Canada created more chances late in the half, with notably a free kick and subsequent corner kick in the 34th minute. Costa Rica, however, cleared both chances to keep the scoreline at the minimum difference.
SECOND HALF:
Both sides introduced new players in the second half as Canada held their 1-0 lead. For the better part of this period, however, the score remained unchanged.
In the 40th minute, Huitema chipped a pass to Jayde Riviere, who then played it back to Huitema with the goalkeeper out of position. Huitema's volley, however, went over the bar.
In the 48th minute, a Mya Jones shot from outside the box sailed high over the bar.
In the 55th minute, Huitema scored after a perfect through ball from substitute Aaliyah Scott. Huitema was sent through on a breakaway before she calmly knocked it in past Solano.
Huitema and Teni Akindoju nearly combined for another goal in the 60th minute, but Akindoju's shot was blocked. A later chance on a Maya Ladhani corner kick was cleared by Costa Rica.
The match ended 2-0 in Canada's favour.
