Match Report

Canada won the third consecutive match at the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, this time 10:0 over Guatemala at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, TX, USA. The 16 February win gave Canada top honours in Group B and put them one win away from a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Both Rebecca Quinn (player of the match) and Nichelle Prince scored hat tricks, while Melissa Tancredi scored twice and Gabrielle Carle and Janine Beckie each scored once. Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé posted the clean sheet.

For Tancredi, her second of the match was the 25th of her storied career. Both Quinn and Carle, meanwhile, scored the first goals of their international careers.

In the first half, Canada’s first of five goals came within four minutes from the opening whistle. After a Beckie pass to Prince down the right side, the Prince cross into the box was headed into goal by veteran Tancredi. From inside the six-yard box, Tancredi jumped higher than Coralia Martinez to win the header and the score.

Canada came close on several occasions before getting on a role. In the 19th minute, goalkeeper Alicia Navas couldn’t handle a shot from Prince, but on the rebound Canada’s Carle was offside before tapping it over the line. Then in the 26th minute, Beckie fired a shot that glanced over the crossbar.

In the 27th minute, Carle’s shot was true as Canada doubled their lead to 2-0. She was in the right place and the right moment after Navas mishandled a Tancredi cross. Carle had two cracks at the bouncing ball, the first off Kellin Mayen and the second into the back of the net. It marked the first goal of Carle’s international “A” career.

In the 36th minute, Beckie made it 3-0 after a cross from Allysha Chapman down the left side. Chapman burst down the wing before centering the ball to the awaiting Beckie.

Not letting up, a Carle header hit the post in the 39th minute and then a Prince shot went just over the crossbar.

In the 43rd minute, Prince stripped the ball from Monterroso from before the half way line. She ran alone onto goal, outmuscling Gloria Aguilar as she entered the box. On her seventh touch in full flight, she chipped the ball over defender Mayen and goalkeeper Navas.

A couple of minutes later, an unfortunate bounce went from Chapman’s foot to Didra Martinez’s hand. On the ensuing penalty, Quinn buried it for her first career goal at the “A” level.

Into the second half, Quinn wasted little time in recording her second career goal. This time, Fleming played the ball to Tancredi at the top of the box. With her back to goal, Tancredi played it back to Quinn who fired it on target for Canada’s 6-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Three minutes later, Quinn completed the hat trick with a header from inside the box. This time, Beckie crossed from the right to Tancredi at the back post. Tancredi headed it back to the middle and Quinn headed it past the goalkeeper. Prince was inside the six-yard box, but she let the ball pass her for goal.

In the 84th minute, Canada made it 8-0 on Prince’s second goal of the match. Fleming played a pass to Beckie who fired on target. Navas made the save, but the rebound fell to Prince who buried it without hesitation.

Two minutes later, Navas was unlucky on a clearance attempt when Tancredi rushed the goalkeeper. Navas kicked the ball from just beyond the six-yard box, but the jumping Tancredi deflected the ball into goal for Canada’s ninth of the match.

Then in the 88th minute, Canada completed their scoring with Prince’s third goal of the match. Beckie played a ball from the left across and beyond the goal, but Carle stopped it before it crossed the line. Carle then played the ball back into the middle, through Tancredi’s legs, where Prince buried it for Canada’s tenth of the match.

The international match, on the third day of the group phase, was played in front of 859 fans. The double-header ticket started with a Trinidad and Tobago 5:1 win over Guyana. The final group standings featured Canada in first place (nine points), Trinidad and Tobago in second place (six points), Guyana in third place (three points), and Guatemala last (no points).
