Match Report

With a Sunday 6:0 win, Canada drew within a victory of qualifying for their third-consecutive Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Six different Canadians scored in the Valentine's Day victory over Trinidad and Tobago at the 2016 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship in Houston, TX, USA.

Diana Matheson, Melissa Tancredi, Christine Sinclair, Kadeisha Buchanan, Janine Beckie, and Jessie Fleming were the goal scorers. For Sinclair, it was the 159th international goal of her career, moving her past Mia Hamm into second place on the world's all-time scoring list.

Sinclair scored the milestone goal in the 63rd minute, just a couple of minutes after she entered the match as a substitute. Sinclair's goal was the first of four scored by Canada in the second half.

Goalkeeper Erin McLeod, meanwhile, posted the 43rd clean sheet of her international career.

While Canada managed to score two goals in the first half, there was very little from either side in the first 20-plus minutes. It was at last the 24th minute that captain Matheson broke the deadlock. Josée Bélanger, from down the right side, sprung Matheson on a run towards goal. Matheson took off alone into the box and fired her shot on first touch low past the goalkeeper Kimika Forbes.

From there, the play had some knocks and bruises as both Desiree Scott (31’) and Danielle Blair (36’) were cautioned on either side. In the 40th minute, Mariah Shade snuck through a pair of Canadian defenders for a shot on goal, but goalkeeper Erin McLeod maintained Canada’s 1-0 lead.

Canada immediately turned their attack up an extra level, with Trinidad and Tobago now having trouble to clear their end. Sophie Schmidt nearly made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute, but her header by the left post was stopped by Forbes. Another two minutes later, Forbes had no help as an unmarked Tancredi headed the ball into the net to double Canada’s lead. Left back Ashley Lawrence delivered the cross from the left touch line into the back side of the box for Tancredi to head home.

Early in the second half, Lawrence had her turn inside the box, but her shot was tipped by Forbes off the crossbar. Sophie Schmidt and Tancredi had combined well to set Lawrence up on the left side.

Canada continued with their chances. At one point, Bélanger undressed Cunningham down the right side and provided a cross that Deanne Rose flicked back for Tancredi. The Canadian goal scorer, however, could not hit the target for a second time.

In the 61st minute, another Bélanger cross was shot high over the crossbar by Tancredi.

At last in the 63rd minute, eternal star Sinclair made history with the third goal of the match. She took a Beckie pass on the left side, moved in on goal, and beat Forbes for the 3-0 lead.

Three minutes later, young Buchanan made it 4-0 after a nice back heel by the younger Rose. This time, it was a Diana Matheson cross into the box from the right, with Schmidt's header saved by the goalkeeper. With the ball heading to the line, Rose kept it in play with a pass to Buchanan.

Canada's next two goals were scored in the 75th and 79th minutes. First, Beckie scored unassisted after Forbes tipped away a Bélanger pass. Unfortunately for Forbes, Beckie was in the right place at the right time.

Next, a Bélanger cross was coolly scored by Fleming from inside the Trinidad and Tobago box.

In the last 10 minutes, Canada continued with their chances, but could not add to their lead. Beckie had a shot stopped by Forbes in the 89th minute while Sinclair had a golden chance that she placed just wide.

The international match, on the second day of the group phase, was played in front of 1,453 fans at BBVA Compass Stadium. The double-header ticket started with a Guyana 2:1 win over Guatemala.
