Canada won their opening match at the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, winning 5:0 over Guyana at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, TX.
Deanne Rose (two) and Ashley Lawrence (three) were the goal scorers in the 11 February victory. Rose also had an assist, while both Christine Sinclair and Sophie Schmidt also recorded two assists each. Erin McLeod posted the clean sheet.
Of note, midfielder Desiree Scott became the 15th Canadian to make her 100th appearance.
Guyana managed to hold down the fort for more than 20 minutes until Rose scored her first of the match. In the opening 10 minutes, they stopped a Sinclair header from a Bélanger cross and then a Scott direct blast from a short Sinclair pass.
In the 26th minute, it was a Christine Sinclair corner that led to the Rose goal. The Sinclair corner was headed by both Buchanan and Schmidt from inside the box before Rose flicked it past Guyana goalkeeper Chante Sandiford.
Just a few minutes later, another Sinclair corner led to a second Canadian goal. This time, Sinclair’s corner was headed into the net by Lawrence, with Rose serving as a screen in front of Sandiford.
The third goal of the first half was scored in the 39th minute after a Guyana turn over. Schmidt collected the ball and made a through pass forward to Rose on the run. Rose strode down the right side before firing her low shot to the opposite corner past the goalkeeper.
Rose nearly made it 4-0 a few minutes later when she was in front of goal, but after collecting the pass she fired high and beyond the target.
Sinclair also had a big chance late in the first half after another Bélanger cross. Sandiford, however, was there to make the big save from inside the six-yard box.
Early in the second half, Lawrence scored twice after crosses from Rose down the right side. In the first minute after the restart, Lawrence headed a Rose cross for the Canadian 4-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, she made it 5-0 after the Rose cross was touched by Sinclair and then fired on target by Lawrence.
Guyana managed to keep Canada off the scoreboard for the rest of the second half, but Canada still dominated the play. After 90 minutes, Canada held 81% of the game's possession and produced an 89% pass accuracy rate through 519 passes.
Attendance for the Canada v Guyana match was 836.
