Canada’s Women’s U-17 Team has been eliminated in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2014 after a 3:2 loss to Venezuela at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose, CRC.
Sarah Kinzner and Marie Levasseur scored for Canada but that wasn’t enough as Deyna Castellanos, Yosneidy Zambrano, and Gabriala Garcia scored for Venezuela as they reached the tournament semi-finals for the first time.
Venezuela employed their direct style of play to good effect early as they jumped in front in the sixth minute. Castellanos was in front as a cross came in from the left and she slotted home to put Venezuela up a goal.
The goal seemed give Canada the metaphorical splash of cold water as they roared to life and turned their superiority in possession into the equalizer in the 19th minute.
For their opening goal, Canada’s leading goalscorer, Levasseur, cut the ball back and Kinzner was in front to pick her spot and tie the game.
Five minutes before the end of the half, Levasseur gave Canada the lead as she took a right-footed shot from the right side. It wasn’t from the best angle but she put enough on it that it got by Venezuelan goalkeeper Franyely Rodriguez.
The lead didn’t last long as the game was level once again as Zambrano was played in alone on the right side. Halftime came just moments later with the teams tied at two goals apiece.
Venezuela got their winner 17 minutes into the second half when Garcia had the ball deep in the Canadian half. She shrugged off two Canadian defenders on the right side and after cutting towards goal, she poked the ball that just snuck inside the post to the left of Canadian goalkeeper Rylee Foster.
