Match Report

Canada’s Women’s U-17 Team is through to the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica after a nerve-wracking 2:1 win over Ghana.

Canada needed a win to assure themselves passage on their own without any help and got two first half goals from Marie Levasseur in the first half. It was a heart-in-the-throat kind of finish as Canada had to play the final 40 minutes with 10-players after Bianca St Georges was sent off.

Ghana got a goal back through Sandra Owusu Ansah and very nearly pulled level a few times but some magnificently timed defending kept them at bay.

Canada was up a goal in the ninth minute when Levasseur capped off some nice passing with a lovely left-footed curling shot that tucked inside the post to the right of Ghana goalkeeper Azume Adams. Levasseur had missed the previous game against Korea DPR with an injury she had suffered in Canada’s opening game against Germany.

With Ghana pressing late in the first half, Levasseur gave the goal Canada very much needed as she popped up at the far post after Marie Mychele Métivier had crossed in from the left. Levasseur was unmarked and simply nodded home from a yard out.

The game was turned on its head five minutes in when Bianca St Georges was the last defender back and was ruled to have taken down Princella Abudea. Since she was the last defender back, St Georges was issued a straight red card.

Despite being a player down, Canada kept coming and almost had a third when Emily Borgmann’s powerful right-footed effort was partially saved and then rolled just on the wrong side of the post.

Ghana started to assert their numerical advantage and were rewarded when Owusu Ansha, a second half substitute, skipped past Easther Mayi Kith and powered a shot into the roof of the net.
