Canada put in a valiant effort against the number-one ranked side at the tournament but eventually conceded two goals en-route to a 2:0 defeat to Mexico in the second group match of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Thursday 11 July at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
The two sides traded chances throughout a relatively open affair, but it was Mexico who carved out the two decisive opportunities either side of the half-time interval.
Raul Jimenez powered home a header in the 42nd minute after a corner-kick was cleverly flicked on by Jorge Enriquez at the near post.
Marco Fabian then put the Mexicans up two-nil when he converted from the spot in the 57th minute after the referee judged that he was brought down in the area.
Marcus Haber had early chance for Canada when fired a shot a Jonathan Orozco from a tight angle in the early going.
Haber then had another chance to put Canada ahead when he directed a header onto target from a Kyle Bekker free kick, prompting a diving save from the Mexican keeper.
Marcel De Jong then came the closest to getting a goal for Canada when his free-kick effort struck the bar in the match’s dying stages.
Canada started the match with Milan Borjan in goal; Nik Ledgerwood, Doneil Henry, David Edgar and Marcel De Jong across the back-line; Julian De Guzman, Samuel Piette, Jonathan Osorio, Kyle Bekker and Issey Nakajima-Farran across the midfield; and Marcel De Jong as the lone centre-forward.
Tosaint Ricketts replaced Haber at half time. Kyle Porter replaced Nakajima-Farran in the 62nd minute. Keven Aleman replaced Bekker in the 83rd minute.
David Edgar was shown a yellow card in the 67th minute for high challenge on Jimenez.
