Match Report: Canada 0:2 Belarus
In a match where Canada squandered a number of excellent opportunities, they were punished by a Belarusian side that made the most of its limited looks on goals and notched a 2:0 win in a Men’s International Friendly on Monday 25 March, 2013 at the Apire Zone in Doha, Qatar.
The first half saw limited chances either way with much of the battle taking place in the middle third of the pitch.
Marcel De Jong had the best chance of the early going when curled in a left-footed free-kick from the right side – but the attempt didn’t dip as desired and drifted over the bar.
Belarus then snatched the lead against the run of play.
Vitali Radzionau rose the highest on the free-kick service from the right and nodded it past debutant keeper Tomer Chencsinski in the 29th minute.
Canada was by far the stronger team throughout the second half but their good play went unrewarded.
Tosaint Ricketts, Will Johnson and substitute Marcus Haber all had opportunities from close range – but all three of the chances went begging.
Belarus then sealed the victory when a long ball was sent forward – Canada’s defence failed to clear – and Uladzimir Khvaschynski nipped in to head the ball over Chencinski and into the back of the net in the 88th minute.
In the final stages of what was a chippy game throughout, a major scuffle broke out at the top of the Canadian area after a two-footed tackle from behind on defender Dejan Jakovic.
Canada started the match with Tomer Chencinski in goal; David Egdar, André Hainault, Dejan Jakovic and Marcel De Jong across the back-line; Julian De Guzman, Atiba Hutchinson and Will Johnson in midfield; and Randy Edwini-Bonsu, Stefan Cebara and Tosaint Ricketts across the attacking line.
Pedro Pacheco and Simeon Jackson entered in place of Guzman and Cebara to starte the second half. Kyle Bekker entered for Hutchinson in the 68th minute. Marcus Haber entered for Edwini-Bonsu in the 69th minute. Finally, Ashtone Morgan replaced De Jong in the 83rd minute.
Chencinski earned his first cap for Canada on the day. Cebara started his first match for the senior team.
De Guzman (29’), De Jong (36’) and Jakovic (73’) received yellow cards in the match.
Belarus started the match with Aleksandr Gutov in goal; and Stanislav Dragun, Ihar Shytau, Oleg Veretilo, Edhar Alakhnovich, Renan Bardini-Bressean, Anton Putsila, Dzmitry Verkhautsou, Maksim Barcadhou, Vitali Radzionau and Siarhei Balanovich across the pitch.
The friendly at the Aspire Zone training facility was watched by approximately 100 onlookers.
