Match Report

Canada were eliminated from the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup after falling 2:3 to Haiti in the Quarterfinals. Canada held a 2-0 lead on goals by Jonathan David and Lucas Cavallini at the break, but lost after Haiti stormed back with goals by Duckens Nazon, Hervé Bazile and Wilde-Donald Guerrier in the second half.

This marked the first time since 2009 that Canada reached the Knockout Stage in back-to-back Concacaf Gold Cup editions, albeit they were again eliminated in the Quarterfinals in 2019 as they were in 2017. Canada finished the tournament with two wins and two losses after scoring 14 goals and conceding six. David set a Canada record with six goals at the Concacaf Gold Cup while both David and Cavallini equaled the national record with their seventh goals of the calendar year.

FIRST HALF:
Jonathan David opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a right-footed shot from just outside the box. After Bryan Alceus fouled David on the run down the right side, Alphonso Davies played a quick free kick past the two-man wall for the uncontested David who moved in and fired his shot past the goalkeeper Placide. It was David’s record sixth goal of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

In the 24th minute, Canada nearly struck again, but the woodwork got in the way. On a free kick from beyond the penalty arc, Davies fired a left-footed shot that curled over the Haiti wall, but hit the crossbar.  A few minutes later, a Junior Hoilett shot forced Placide into a full dive to make a terrific save on the Canada attack.

In the 28th minute, Doneil Henry pressured Haiti into a turnover and the quick combination of Derek Cornelius, Atiba Hutchinson and Scott Arfield played Lucas Cavallini into the clear towards Canada’s second goal of the game. Cavallini moved around Placide easily and tapped the ball into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Haiti’s best chance came in the 38th minute, but the acrobatic shot was saved by Milan Borjan. On the play, Wilde-Donald Guerrier volleyed a cross from inside the box, but Borjan was on the spot to make the save.

SECOND HALF:
Five minutes into the second half, Haiti got on the board after a defensive lapse by Canada. On a pass back from Marcus Godinho to Milan Borjan, Duckens Nazon used his speed to force the error and steal the ball at the doorstep of Canada’s goal. He had no problem sliding it into the open net.

Haiti then got the equaliser after Hervé Bazile was tackled by Godinho inside the box. Bazile took the penalty and beat Borjan with a left-footed shot with just 20 minutes remaining.

In the 76th minute, Haiti got their winner after a terrific touch by Wilde-Donald Guerrier to get around Borjan. Nazon did most of the leg work moving around the Canada defence before feeding Guerrier inside the box who took a touch to control the ball around Borjan and then slipped it into the open net.

Canada fought back and nearly scored an equaliser in the 84th minute, but captain Hutchinson was ultimately just offside on the play.
