Match Report

Canada won 7:0 over Cuba in the group finale of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, a record-breaking night that secured Canada’s spot in the competition’s Quarterfinal stage. The 23 June victory gave Canada six points through three matches, which secured Canada second place in Group A standings and a spot in the Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinals.

Lucas Cavallini and Jonathan David each scored a hat trick while Junior Hoilett scored a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Milan Borjan posted the 18th clean sheet of his career, tied for second most on the all-time Canada list.

FIRST HALF:
In the first half, Jonathan David opened the scoring in the third minute on a pass from Hoilett. Derek Cornelius played the ball up the left wing for Hoilett to make the centering cross; David had little problem knocking it pass the goalkeeper Sandy Sanchez. Inside the third minute, the David right-footed goal was the quickest Canada goal in Concacaf Gold Cup history.

In the 15th minute, Lucas Cavallini hit the outside of the post from inside the box. Scott Arfield played the ball wide right for Marcus Godinho to centre the opportunity for Cavallini.

In the 21st minute, Cavallini doubled Canada’s lead after Jorge Kindelan redirected the a Hoilett cross off the post. The ball rebounded into the steps of Cavallini who tapped it in from the line.

Cavallini scored Canada’s third goal in the 43rd minute with a lovely redirection from inside the box. Davies played it to David from inside the box and David then played it back to Cavallini who got in front of Kindelan to brilliantly redirect the ball out of the air with the outside of his right foot past the goalkeeper Sanchez.

Just over two minutes later, Cavallini completed his hat trick from inside the box, knocking in Davies’ cross from the left side. Cavallini became the first Canadian to score a hat trick in a Concacaf Gold Cup match and just the fourth Canadian player to score a hat trick in an international match.

SECOND HALF:
In the 50th minute, Hoilett made it 5-0, knocking it in after Cuban fullback Dariel Morejon had stopped a David shot off the line. David and Davies had played give and go to get past the goalkeeper, but Morejon did well to stop the shot; Hoilett was on the spot, however, to score the goal. For Canada, it marked the first time they had scored five goals in a Concacaf Gold Cup match.

In the 55th minute, David was taken down on the run inside the box, but the Cavallini’s resulting penalty attempt hit the crossbar. On the play, Hoilett played it to Cavallini who played it to Arfield who in turn played it forward for David on the run. Into the box, David was taken down by centre back Yosel Piedra.

In the 71st minute, David scored his second goal to make it 6-0. From an Osorio corner kick, the ball moved from Hoilett to Arfield, but then cleared by Kindelan. The ball, however, came to David who stayed in front of Roberney Caballero to fire his left-footed shot from just outside the box.

In the 77th minute, David completed the hat trick from inside the box on a pass from Hoilett. it marked the first time that two Canadian players scored a hat trick in the same match.
