Canada fell 1:2 to host Germany in a 2017 Women’s International Friendly match in Erfut. The match was on even terms after a Deanne Rose first-half equaliser, but Germany eventually struck back with the Linda Dallman winner in the 86th minute.
FIRST HALF:
Both sides cautiously tested each other in the opening 15 minutes, but Kristin Demann firing Germany’s first shot in the ninth minute and a pair of Ashley Lawrence attempts at the other end blocked in the 12th minute.
In the 13th minute, the first Germany goal was scored on an unlucky play in the Canadian end. The pass back from Shelina Zadorsky was kicked by Sheridan, but the ball clipped off her shin and back off her outstretched leg into the goal. Germany were up 1-0.
Canada were undeterred as they looked to get back on even terms. In the 20th minute, a nice build up run by Beckie down the left side produced a cross into the box, but the Christine Sinclair header was wide of the target.
In the 23rd minute, a Dzsenifer Marozsán shot on targeted deflected en route to goal, but was still caught easily by Sheridan.
In the 38th minute, Canada equalised on the Rose goal. While Sinclair won’t get an assist, the Canadian was the catalyst for the turnover in pressuring goalkeeper Almuth Schult in the 37th minute. While Schult managed to clear the ball from Sinclair’s touch, Schult’s next long kick on the same sequence went to Canadian defender Allysha Chapman.
Chapman’s header was collected by Desiree Scott in the midfield and, after spinning past Dzsenifer Marozsán, played back to Kadeisha Buchanan. Canada quickly moved the play up field from Buchanan to Beckie to Sophie Schmidt and, with the give-and-go, back to Beckie who down the right side crossed it past three defenders into the path of goalscorer Deanne Rose at the back post.
In less than 40 seconds after Sinclair had used her speed to disrupt Schult and the German defence, Rose had put Canada on level terms with the 1-1 equaliser.
SECOND HALF:
In the second half, with Stephanie Labbé now in goal, Canada made their first important save off a Marozsán corner kick. The kick was headed back by Josephine Henning and flicked by a marked Anja Mittag in the six-yard box, but collected by Labbé before it crossed the line.
Both sides made their full complement of six substitutions in the second half. The changing formations searched for the go-ahead goal, but both defences were up to the task.
In the 75th minute, Marozsán had a chance stopped. Then at the other end, a Beckie cross from the left was tipped over the goal by Schult. In the 80th minute, there was a nice pass through to Lena Peterman, but well marked from outside the 18-yard box her shot was easily caught by Labbé.
The winning goal was ultimately scored in the 86th minute off a corner kick from the left side. Labbé punched out the initial kick, but the ball fell into the pathway of Dallman whose left-footed shot beat the crowd of defenders and the goalkeeper.
