Canada won 1:0 over Sweden in an away Women's International Friendly match in Trelleborg. Janine Beckie scored her 15th career goal while Stephanie Labbé posted her 19th clea sheet in the victory.
With the win, Canada improves to four wins, one draw, and one loss in six international matches this year. The Beckie goal was a build-up masterpiece, a full 46-second sequence that moved through eight players on 16 passes before the final touch beat Hedvig Lindahl for the 33rd minute winner.
FIRST HALF:
In the 21st minute, goalkeeper Lindahl made a good save off a Sophie Schmidt shot from the top of the box. Captain Christine Sinclair provided the pass to the oncoming Schmidt from the right side. In the 27th minute, Beckie played a through ball to Sinclair on the right whose shot from inside the box trickled just wide.
Back inside the box just two minutes later, a series of chances after a miss-clearance was finally blocked by Sweden and cleared from danger.
The breakthrough was in the 33rd minute: a prolonged buildup that started with Labbé and passed through nearly the entire team before Beckie beat Lindahl from inside the box. There were 16 passes on the play, culminating with Rose getting the ball to Sinclair and Sinclair tipping it forward to Beckie.
SECOND HALF:
With Canada up 1-0, Sweden pressed for an equaliser but were unable to beat the Canadian defence. They came close in the 56th minute on a bouncing ball that eluded Labbé’s grasp, but the ball was eventually cleared by Schmidt.
In the 82nd minute, Sinclair nearly caught up to a wonderful long pass through from Lawrence, but goalkeeper Lindahl was first to the ball. In the 87th minute, second-half substitute Hanna Glass tried a long shot from the left side, but it posed no danger for Labbé.
Sweden were again close in the dying minutes. From a corner kick, a Linda Sembrandt header was just wide of the target. A minute later, a nice play from Caroline Seger inside the box was redirected by Lotta Schelin just wide.
