Canada pulled off a 1:0 victory in the dying minutes of the second match day at the 2016 Algarve Cup. Summer Clarke, one of two Canadian debutants on the day, played the part of the hero with the winner in the 86th minute.
Goalkeeper Sabrina D'Angelo, equally making her debut, posted the clean sheet with the help of her team. The 1:0 victory gives Canada an important three points after the second of three matches in the group phase.
On the Clarke goal, the attack started with a Rhian Wilkinson cross from the right side, headed away by Laura Deloose, but right into the path of Sophie Schmidt. Canada’s Schmidt composed herself and fired a left-footed shot across target, but amazingly her shot hit the post and stayed out.
Off the post, Nichelle Prince connected on the rebound, but teenaged goalkeeper Justien Odeurs made the save. Janine Beckie fired the next rebound, but this time the ball was only partly blocked by Aline Zeler. The bouncing ball went to the left post where Summer Clarke headed once - stopped by Deloose - then tapped it through between Deloose, Odeurs, and Heleen Jacques all on the goal line but unable to stop Clarke's heroics.
Late in the match, Canada nearly doubled their lead on a Nichelle Prince strike, but the shot hit the post and stayed out.
On the same day, Iceland took control of the group with six points following a 4:1 win over Denmark. Canada and Iceland will meet next in the group finale on 7 March.
