Canada's women's youth team completed round-robin action with a perfect 3-0-0 record at the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico. Canada won 2:0 over Nicaragua, 3:1 over Jamaica and 4:0 over Costa Rica in three group matches in five days.
"Today, we began to look like a team that will not only threaten people, but will be tough on defence, too," said coach Bob Birarda after the 4:0 win over Costa Rica. "Our back four looked in control tonight at all times. This is a big step from previous games here."
Canada's back four featured Rheanne Sleiman, captain Lexi Marton, Myriam Bouchard and Allysha Chapman. In net has been Erin McNulty.
"We have shown improvement each game," says Birarda. "Now we are excited about the challenge of facing games that will mean one team qualifies. We have had some big performances from several different players when we needed them, be it because players were sick, injured, or absent with the senior team."
The three senior players that missed the opening Canada-Nicaragua match were Jonelle Filigno, Jodi-Ann Robinson and Sophie Schmidt. The trio had been in Suwon, Korea Republic for the start of the Peace Queen Cup. Their senior teammates went on to finish second after an 0:1 loss to the top-ranked United States in the final.
"I think we can finally have everyone healthy for our next game," says Birarda. "That is exciting."
Canada's next match is the semi-final on Tuesday 24 June. Should Canada win, it will advance to the 26 June final and automatically qualify for the FIFA U-20 Womens's World Cup Chile 2008.
"We now have some time to rest, recover, and prepare for our semi-final opponent," says Birarda.
Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners, has participated in every FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, including the inaugural 2002 event that Canada hosted.
