Canada is guaranteed to advance to the semi-final of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship this weekend. Canada is tied for first place in Group B with Costa Rica, the same Costa Rica that Canada will face this Saturday 21 June. Both teams won their opening matches, thus eliminating Nicaragua and Jamaica from the competition.
"We can get ready for game three knowing that we have qualified for the next round," says coach Bob Birarda. "Costa Rica, however, has an excellent team with 17 players that participated in the recent CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament. Costa Rica will be a big test for us."
Canada won 2:0 over Nicaragua and 3:1 over Jamaica. The Canada-Costa Rica match kicks off at 14.30 on Saturday. Both teams will be striving to finish first to avoid playing the top team from the other group. If Canada draws Costa Rica, Canada will finish first based on goal differential (Canada +4 vs. Costa Rica +3).
"The group has had an excellent focus and team spirit," says coach Birarda. "They will be ready to fight Costa Rica in two days."
Every match in the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship will be broadcast online via concacaf.com. Each match will be available on delay approximately two hours after the match's conclusion. The match will be broadcast in its entirety in at least two segments - one for each half plus a third if extra time and penalty kicks are necessary.
Should Canada advance, it will play a team from Group B (United States, Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba or hosts México) in one of the semi-finals on 25 June (13.00 or 15.30). The two semi-final winners advance to the championship final (14.30 on 28 June) while the two losers move on to the consolation match (12.00 on 28 June).
The top-three teams in the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Chile 2008. The FIFA tournament runs 19 November to 7 December. Canada has participated in every FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup since the tournament had its inception in 2002.
