Match Report

Canada ended round robin play in front of 3,256 Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica, to win Group B.

Canada's first goal of the afternoon came in the 28th minute of play when Charmaine Hooper placed a left footed penalty into the bottom right corner to beat Costa Rica's goaltender Marie Claire Herra. Silvana Burtini earned the penalty when she was dragged down in the box. Shortly afterward, Costa Rica returned with their only scoring opportunity of the afternoon as Jackeline Alvarez got in behind the Canadian defence to only be stopped by Canada's Karina LeBlanc.

In the 42nd minute, Hooper continued Canada's scoring with her second of the match when she found herself all alone outside the 18 yard box and chipped the ball over the head of Herra to earn her sixth goal of the tournament.

In the second half, Christine Sinclair converted a Burtini corner kick in the 49th minute of play to bring Canada's lead to 3-0. Three goals were all Canada needed as Karina LeBlanc earned her second shutout in two games.

Burtini was denied an opportunity of her own in the 63rd minute when Herra stopped the second shot of two she fired from six yards out. Burtini's first shot rebounded off the cross bar.

Canada out-shot Costa Rica 17 ? 2.

In the three round robin games, Canada outscored their opponents 23-1. Sinclair led the Canadian team with seven goals in the tournament, Hooper closely followed with six, Kara Lang with four, and Silvana Burtini with two.
