Canada's Women's world Cup Team got off to a convincing start in their attempts to qualify for the Women's World Cup with an impressive 11-1 dismantling of Haiti in their opening game in Group B of the Women's Gold Cup at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, BC.
Christine Sinclair scored four goals while Charmaine Hooper added a hat trick to pace the Canadian attack.
It only took six minutes for Hooper to score her 50th international goal in her 86th appearance for Canada. Referee Cassie Moore judged Hooper had been fouled as she tried to run on to a ball in the box. Hooper stepped up to the spot and coolly beat Haitian goalkeeper Gina Montinard.
?This was a decent start for us,? said Canadian head coach Even Pellerud. ?I was happy with our first half performance but in the second half we had a few problems. All in all I am satisfied but Jamaica and Costa Rica will be tougher opponents.?
The Haitians shocked the crowd of 1,531 with a goal off a scramble in front of the Canadian goal. Kencia Marseille jumped on a loose ball and beat Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod in the 14th minute.
Two minutes later, Sinclair put any thoughts of a Haitian comeback away with a decisive strike into the far corner in the 16th minute.
The Canadians made it 4-1 when Brittany Timko spotted a streaking Sinclair and found her with a great cross. Sinclair's first touch matched the quality of the cross and her square ball to Hooper was converted easily, to make it 51 goals and counting.
Candace Chapman got in on the scoring action in the 30th minute when she found herself unmarked at the far post off a Burtini corner kick and converted a loose ball past the shell shocked Montinard. Two minutes later Hooper redirected a shot from Lang for the hat trick and the rout was on.
Sinclair scored her second in the 44th minute, third in the 71st minute, and her fourth in the 86th minute.
Haiti's long evening was compounded by an own goal by Judith Fenelon in the 79th minute.
Silvana Burtini scored in the 11th and 84th minutes.
Costa Rica defeated Jamaica 2-0 in the earlier game, Wednesday.
On Friday, Canada will face Jamaica while Costa Rica plays Haiti.
