Match Report

Canada drew 1:1 away against Scotland in a March Men's Internaitonal Friendly match in Edinburgh. Fraser Aird, making just his fifth international appearance, scored the opening goal and earned Canada Soccer's Player of the Match honours. He dedicated his first goal to his late father William who passed away in While Aird had another brilliant chance to score in the second half, it was Steven Naismith's first half equaliser that knotted the match for the 1:1 result.

FIRST HALF:

Aird scored the opener in the 11th minute, jumping on a misclearance by the Scottish defender Charlie Mulgrew. Junior Hoilett and Maxim Tissot did well to combine on the left side before Tissot's cross was played into the box. With defender Lee Wallace fallen to the ground, Aird was unmarked to fire a strong shot past the goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Just a few minutes later, Scotland's Robert Snodgrass nearly equalised on a long shot that beat everyone except the far post.

In the 23rd minute, Simon Thomas was called upon to make a good save on Chris Martin. Three minutes later, it was Aird with a chance at the other end, but his shot went wide.

In the 27th minute, a Simeon Jackson chance sailed just over the bar; in the 31st minute, Scotland's Oliver Burke had a chance stopped by Thomas.

In the 35th minute, Scotland equalised after Canada failed to clear from within their box. Thomas made an initial save, but a clearance fell to Scotland's Tom Cairney who fired it back in. The ball then fell to Naismith on the left side who made no mistake in burrying it from close range.

SECOND HALF:

In the second half, both managers made substitutions, with of note La'Vere Corbin-Ong making his international debut for Canada.

Canada's best chance to take the lead came in the 78th minute after Aird and Nik Ledgerwood combined well down the right side. Aird strode in from the right and fired a shot that an extended McGregor did well to push over the bar.
