Match Report

Ten-man Canada fell 1:2 to Costa Rica in their opening match of the 2017 CONCACAF Men's Under-17 Championship, conceding the winning goal in the 95th and final minute of play. Canadian Antonio Rocco Romeo had scored an equaliser early in the second half, but was ultimately ejected in the 83rd minute after reacting to several pinches by Costa Rica centre back Fernán Faerron.

Costa Rica's Rodolfo Alfaro scored in both the 44th and 95th minutes of the 22 April group match. From the three-match opening phase, Canada will next face Cuba while Costa Rica will face Suriname on 25 April.

FIRST HALF:
In the 19th minute, Jonathan David slipped past Karim Arce into the box, but his right-footed shot was stopped by a Montenegro foot save. From the rebound, the ball hit Walter Cortes and fell to Faria’s feet, but the chance on goal was shot over the crossbar.

In the 44th minute, an Alexander Roman free kick from distance was headed by Julian Dunn-Johnson, but right into the path of Rodolfo Alfaro inside the penalty area. Alfaro took one step sideways and fired his low shot for the 1-0 lead.

SECOND HALF:
Canada scored in the 51st minute after a good drive and shot by Jonathan David earned Canada the corner kick. On the ensuing play, the Faria kick was headed on target by Romeo.

Canada nearly made it 2-1 in the 61st minute after a run by Olakunle Dada-Luke put Costa Rica on their heels. The ball eventually fell to Faria who fired a shot on target, deflecting dangerously off the defender before the outstretched goalkeeper Ricardo Montenegro made the key save of the match.

Canada had another great run in the 65th minute when David got through past the last defender, but he was taken down from behind.

Canada continued to press and won a dangerous free kick in the 83rd minute. Lining up for the play, the opposing players started shoving for space before Fernan Faerron went down and Romeo was shown the red card.

In the 95th minute, it was Josué Abarca who opened up the play with his run into the box. He then slid a pass to his right for Alfaro to press forward and slip the ball into the net for the 2-1 winner.

LINEUPS & NOTES:
Canada's starting XI featured Gianluca Catalano in goal, Émile Legault at right back, Julian Dunn-Johnson and Antonio Rocco Romeo at centre back, Jake Ruby at left back, and Matthew Baldisimo, Steffen Yeates, Noble Okello, Jordan Faria, Olakunle Dada-Luke, and Jonathan David from the midfield up through to the attack.
