An inexperienced Canadian team was overpowered 4:0 by a quality Denmark side in a Men’s International Friendly on 26 January 2013 in Tucson, AZ.
Interim Canadian Head Coach Colin Miller gave debuts to six new players on the day as Canada took its first step forward following its elimination from FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014™ Qualifiers.
It was Canada who had the first real chance of the game when Ashtone Morgan burst down the left wing and delivered a quality ball. Neither Tosaint Ricketts nor the on-rushing Nik Ledgerwood were able to connect, and a follow-up opportunity for Dwayne De Rosario was blocked.
Denmark wasted little time punishing Canada for its miss.
Andreas Cornelius buried a free header to the bottom right corner in the 8th minute to give the Danes the 1-0 lead. Kasper Lorentzen then cut through the Canadian back-line with relative ease and coolly finished to put Denmark 2-0 ahead in the 11th minute.
Denmark’s third goal came from a corner, as a first attempt crashed off the cross-bar before the chance was tucked away from close range by Cornelius for this second of the match in the 35th minute.
Canada’s defensive shape improved in the second half and chances for either team were limited.
Russell Teibert and Tosaint Rickets combined to carve out a decent chance for the Canadians early in the second period.
Teibert, played a one-two pass with Ricketts before hitting a firm effort from 22 yards. The shot was well saved by Danish goalkeeper Steffen Rasmussen.
Denmark then extended its lead to four on the next real chance.
The Danes worked a play down the left wing before the ball was centered to Cornelius who made no mistake completing his hat trick from there on 66 minutes.
Ricketts tested the Danish goalkeeper with a long-range effort minutes later, but that’s as close as Canada would come to pulling one back.
Attendance for the match at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium was 3,042.
