Match Report

Canada got off to the best of starts at the CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship with a rampant 5:0 win over Haiti in the team’s first match of the competition at the Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez in Ciudad de Panama, Panama. The young Canucks scored five times in the 1 March 2012 opener.
.
The Canadians were unable to break a committed Haitian defense in the first half but exploded for five goals in the second period, and Head Coach Andrew Olivieri’s side did it all in style.

Canada was propelled by a pair of braces by Nkem Ezurike and half-time substitute Catherine Charron-Delage, while Jenna Richardson chipping in with a marker as well.

The team found its first breakthrough immediately after the half-time interval when Ezurike fortuitously knocked a rebound in following an excellent corner delivery by captain Shelina Zadorvsky.

The Canadian U-20’s struck again only minutes later when Charron-Delage powered a header beyond the sprawling keeper and into the top corner after a well-aimed cross from the right flank.

It was Ezurike who found the third for Canada, as she was in the right place to collect a rebound in the six-yard area before pivoting and finishing neatly to the put the game beyond any plausible Haitian reach.

Up next it was Jenna Richardson who gently side-footed an effort to the far post-and-in to make it four, before Charron-Delage dispatched a half-volley from just inside the area to complete the five-goal romp.

For this match, Canada's starting XI featured Sabrina D'Angelo in goal, Vanessa Legault-Cordisco at right back, Lauren Granberg and Shelina Zadorsky at centre back, Kylie Davis at left back, and Jaclyn Sawicki, Constance de Chantal-Dumont, Jenna Richardson, Amélia Pietrangelo, Nkem Ezurike, and Olivia Colosimo from the midfield up through to the attack.

In the second half, U-20 coach Andrew Olivieri replaced Pietrangelo with Catherine Charron-Delage (46th minute), Sawicki with Nicole Setterlund (67'), and Ezurike with Christine Exeter (72').
