Match Report

It took 11 rounds of penalties before CF Montreal booked their spot in the 2021 Canadian Championship Final with a 0:0 (7:8 on penalties) victory over Forge FC.

The match was Forge’s first-ever against a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

The first chance of the match came to the Canadian Premier League side after a giveaway by CF Montreal in the middle of the pitch to Emery Welshman who ran at pace at the defenders before making a square pass to Molham Babouli, but the show was easily handled by the Montreal keeper, Sebastian Breza (4’).

Montreal’s first opportunity came in the 10’ on a strike from distance by Sunusi Ibrahim that was saved by Forge FC goalkeeper Triston Henry.

Just a minute later, Montreal again looked threatening. Ahmed Hamdi made a darting run, carrying the ball past the Forge defenders and got a shot away, but he was stopped by Henry. The rebound fell to the feet of Ibrahim, but he fired his shot over the open net (11’).

In the 37’, Babouli found space to get a shot away that was saved by Breza, and the attempt off the rebound by Omar Browne was also stopped and then cleared away by Montreal.

In the 39’, Browne’s shot from a free kick went just over the crossbar.

The deadlock continued in the second half, with the majority of the chances coming to the CanPL side. In the 49’, Babouli found himself some space after cutting past a Montreal defender and then put in a perfectly placed low cross, but Browne wasn’t able to get enough contact on it to get Forge on the scoreboard, and the chance went wide.

In the 54’, Forge had another opportunity from a quick free kick that caught the visitors off guard, but they were ultimately not able to convert the chance.

Breza made a solid save to maintain the clean sheet on a shot from a tight angle by Welshman (56’).

CF Montreal had a chance to score a late winner in the 83’. A through pass by Zorhan Bassong found Lassi Lappalainen and gave him the opportunity to cut into the box towards the near post, but Henry did well to stick with the play and make the save.

With no goals between the two sides in 90 minutes, the match headed straight to penalties. After 10 rounds, the penalty shootout came down to the two goalkeepers, Triston Henry of Forge FC and Sebastian Breza of CF Montreal. Breza saved the penalty from Henry, and then turned around and scored his own penalty to win the match for Montreal.

Forge FC’s starting XI featured Canadian Triston Henry in the net, with Canadians Dominic Samuel and Kwame Awuah joined by Daniel Krutzen on defence. Alexander Achinioti-Jonsson and Elimane Cisse were paired with Canadians Molham Babouli and Kyle Bekker, who captained the side, in midfield. Emery Welshman, Omar Browne, and Canadian Tristan Borges started up front.

Canadian Sebastian Breza started in goal for CF Montreal. Mustafa Kizza, Aljaz Struna, and Canadians Zachary Brault-Guillard, Joel Waterman, and Zorhan Bassong formed the defensive line. Ahmed Hamdi and Matko Miljevic started in the midfield alongside Canadians Rida Zouhir and Samuel Piette, who captained the visitors. Sunusi Ibrahim rounded out the side up front.
