Match Report

Toronto FC advanced to the Semi-Final Round of the Canadian Championship with a 4:0 win over York United FC.

York United got the first chance of the match in the 7’, as Dominick Zator got a strong head on the corner kick, but the header sailed just wide.

In the 9’, Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross attempt took a deflection off a York defender and hit the side of the net.

In the 14’, Yeferson Soteldo, Michael Bradley, and Ifunanyachi Achara were able to make a number of short passes to each other in the York United box, but the eventual low shot from Achara was stopped by goalkeeper Nathan Ingham.

In the 27’, Bradley was nearly able to pick out Shaffelburg in behind the defence, but Chrisnovic N’Sa slid in to intercept the pass.

All of the pressure eventually paid off for Toronto, and they took the lead in the 34’. Richie Laryea played a through pass to Shaffelburg who quickly put a high cross into the box which found Jonathan Osorio in space to head the ball into the back of the York United net (34’).

In the 40’, Roger Thompson’s perfectly times sliding talked in the box denied Achara a clear chance to add to the TFC lead.

Toronto was able to double their lead just one minute later, as Shaffelburg put in another cross from a similar area and perfectly picked out the attacking run of Achara who got his right boot on the cross to put it past Ingham (41’).

In the second half, York United began to get back into the game and create some chances of their own. In the 53’ Sebastian Gutierrez was nearly able to cut the lead in half with a shot that went just over the crossbar.

In the 72’ Shaffelburg was able to put in another fantastic cross, picking out the head of Soteldo but Ingham got a strong palm to the header to keep it out and followed the first save up with a second to make sure the ball went out of play to safety.

In the 83’, Thompson took down Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty inside the York United penalty area and Toronto was awarded a penalty. Soteldo stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake, giving TFC a 3:0 lead (84’).

Fresh off the substitute bench, Noble Okello was played in behind the York defence by a perfectly timed pass by Bradley, and found himself clear through on a breakaway. He put a tidy finish in under the keeper’s arm to make it 4:0 (89’).

Toronto FC started Alex Bono in goal. Omar Gonzalez, Chris Mavinga, Auro Jr., and Canadian Richie Laryea started in defence. Captain Michael Bradley, Marc Delgado, Yeferson Soteldo, and Canadian Jonathan Osorio made up the midfield, and Ifunanyachi Achara paired up with Canadian Jacob Shaffelburg up front.

Head coach Javier Perez made three substitutions, bringing on Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty for Achara (60’), Noble Okello for Osorio (86’) and Patrick Mullins for Soteldo (86’).

York United FC had 10 Canadian players featured in their starting line-up. Nathan Ingham started in goal, with Dominick Zator, Roger Thompson, Diyaeddine Abzi, and Chrisnovic N’sa making up the defensive line. Maximillian Ferrari, Noah Verhoeven, Michael Petrasso, and Isaiah Johnston were joined in midfield by the lone international starter, Sebastian Gutierrez. Lowell Wright was the lone striker in the squad.

Head coach James Brennan first substitution saw Jordan Wilson replace Gutierrez (58’). He then made a triple substitution, bringing on Nicholas Hamilton, Cedric Toussaint, and Alvaro Rivero Sanchez for Ferrari, Johnston, and Petrasso (77’). Finally, Ijah Halley came on in place of Wright (87’).
