Women’s Team and Coach Named Finalists For Awards

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association is proud to announce the selection of the Women’s World Cup Team and Head Coach Even Pellerud as finalists for the 31st Annual Canadian Sport Award by the Spirit of Sport Foundation.

The Women’s World Cup Team was selected in the Female Team of the Year category for their fourth place finish at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in the United States last fall.

“What an honour it is to be a candidate for this award,” said Pellerud. “This is significant and confirms the increased status of soccer in Canada. It will provide additional motivation for the players in the short and long term.”

In addition to the selection of the team, Pellerud is a finalist in the Coach of the Year category of the awards. Pellerud’s nomination by Right To Play (formerly Olympic Aid), an international NGO based in Toronto was fully supported by the CSA.

“I’m representing a team effort. Sometimes a coach is rewarded due to great player and team performances,” Pellerud said on his selection. “I’m sharing this candidature with the rest of the coaching staff. Again, it was a team effort!”

The CSA is also pleased that adidas Canada and Whirlpool Canada have been named finalists in the National Team Support Category of the Corporate Excellence Awards. Both sponsors provided unsurpassed support in 2003 and contributed to the success of the Women’s World Cup Team at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Each November, the Spirit of Sport Foundation calls for nominations from the general public and the Canadian sporting community. Accepted nominations are forwarded to the Selection Advisory Committee (SAC) for initial review and sent to two juries. Jury ballots for all categories are submitted to KPMG directly for final tally. The winners will be announced at the Canadian Sport Awards on March 23, 2004 at a gala event at the CBC in Toronto.
