Women’s National Team nominees for the 2023 Canada Soccer Player Awards

Canada Soccer have launched voting for the 2023 Canada Soccer Players Awards to honour the top footballers from the year at both the club and international levels. Canadian media and coaches will vote for the Canada Soccer Players of the Year Award while fans will vote for the Allstate Canada Soccer National Teams Good Hands Award as well as the Men’s National Team and Women’s National Team Moments of the Year.

The co-winners for this year’s Canada Soccer Players of the Year Award will feature one player from the Men’s National Team and one player from the Women’s National Team. Nominees from the Men’s National Team Program are Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, Stephen Eustáquio, Alistair Johnston, Ismaël Koné, Cyle Larin, Richie Laryea and Kamal Miller. Nominees from the Women’s National Team Program are Kadeisha Buchanan, Jessie Fleming, Vanessa Gilles, Cloé Lacasse, Ashley Lawrence, Adriana Leon, Nichelle Prince, Jade Rose and Kailen Sheridan.

This year marks the 31st year for the Canada Soccer Player Awards, but also the first since record holders Christine Sinclair and Atiba Hutchinson have left international football after more than two decades with the Women’s and Men’s National Teams. Sinclair is the all-time leader with 14 Player of the Year awards while Hutchinson is the Men’s National Team leader with six Player of the Year awards.

Media and coaches will vote for the Canada Soccer Players of the Year Award from Thursday 7 December to Tuesday 12 December with the two winners to be announced on 14 and 15 December.

KADEISHA BUCHANAN
Kadeisha Buchanan featured in her third FIFA World Cup in 2023 and she helped Canada qualify for another Olympic Games. She was tied for second on Canada with 12 starts and she ranked third with 1,034 minutes played. At the club level from January to November 2023 with Chelsea FC, she made 22 appearances and played 1,377 minutes. She helped Chelsea FC reach the Semifinals in 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.

JESSIE FLEMING
Jessie Fleming featured in her third FIFA World Cup in 2023 and she captained Canada to yet another qualification to the Olympic Games. She featured in 12 of Canada’s 13 matches and had one assist. At the club level from January to November 2023, she made 32 appearances, played 1,588 minutes and scored two goals. She helped Chelsea FC reach the Semifinals in 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.

VANESSA GILLES
Vanessa Gilles featured in her first FIFA World Cup in 2023 and she helped Canada qualify for another Olympic Games. She played 12 matches, scored one goal and was one of four players with more than 1,000 minutes. At the club level with FCF Olympique Lyonnais from January to November, she made 25 appearances, played 2,181 minutes and scored eight goals. She won the 2022-23 Championnat de France, the 2022-23 Coupe de France, and the 2023 Trophée des Champions. She also reached the Quarterfinals in UEFA Champions League.

CLOÉ LACASSE
Cloé Lacasse took part in her first FIFA World Cup in 2023 and she scored her first goal of the year at home in Toronto during Olympic Qualifiers. She was one of four players that featured in all 13 Canada matches and the only Canadian to earn Player of the Match honours three times. At the club level from January to November 2023 with SL Benfica and Arsenal FC, she made 30 appearances, played 2,033 minutes and scored 19 goals. She helped Benfica win the 2022-23 Campeonato Nacional and the Taça da Liga.

ASHLEY LAWRENCE
Ashley Lawrence took part in her third FIFA World Cup and she helped Canada qualify for another Olympic Games after she provided assists in both legs of two-match qualification series. She led Canada with 13 starts, 1,050 minutes and four assists. At the club level from January to November 2023 with both Paris Saint-Germain FC and Chelsea FC, she made 25 appearances, played 1,805 minutes and scored one goal. She reached the Quarterfinals of 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.

ADRIANA LEON
Adriana Leon took part in her third FIFA World Cup in 2023 and she scored the 1-1 equaliser with a draw against the Republic of Ireland. She co-led Canada with three goals and was one of four players that featured in all 13 matches. At the club level from January to November 2023 with Manchester United FC, Portland Thorns FC and Aston Villa FC, she made 15 appearances, played 576 minutes and scored one goal.

NICHELLE PRINCE
Nichelle Prince returned from injury to make her second FIFA World Cup squad and she scored her first goal in the year in Canada’s away match in Olympic Qualifiers. She scored three goals in six matches and earned Performance of the Match honours twice. From August to October 2023 after her return to the Houston Dash, she made seven appearances and played 396 minutes.

JADE ROSE
Jade Rose featured in nine Canada matches and helped her nation qualify for yet another Olympic Games, but she missed her first FIFA World Cup through injury. She made her home debut in Toronto during Olympic Qualifiers. During the college season from August to November 2023 with Harvard University, Rose made 16 appearances, played 1,181 minutes, scored one goal and got four assists. Harvard reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.

KAILEN SHERIDAN
Kailen Sheridan was in goal for 12 of Canada’s 13 matches and she earned Performance of the Match honours twice against Brazil. She posted five clean sheets and co-led Canada with 1,050 minutes played (tied with Ashley Lawrence). At the club level from January through November 2023 with San Diego Wave FC, she made 21 appearances, played 1,889 minutes, and posted 10 clean sheets. She helped San Diego win the 2023 NWSL Shield.
