The U-19 Women’s team five-day training camp proved to be a positive experience for the development team as they earned one win and one tie in Greensboro, North Carolina. Canada defeated UNCG 2-0 and tied Duke University 2-2.
“The results were not the main focus of this tour nor the U-19 program. The individual and team performances are. This tour accomplished our goals and along the way, the players earned a win and a tie,” stated head coach Stuart Neely.
Canada took the field against UNC Greensboro on Friday, August 18th. In the 43rd minute, Leah Robinson of Nova Scotia opened the scoring when she converted a deep cross from midfielder Marie-Claude Henry. Robinson fired a shot into the opposing net from 25 yards out to put Canada up 1-0.
Anne-Marie Lapalme stepped into a free kick in the 88th minute with a blistering shot resulting in Canada’s second goal of the game.
Canada met Duke University on Sunday, August 18 in their second game of the camp. In the 30th minute, Sarah Pinelli lobbed a clearing attempt by Duke’s defence over the goalkeeper’s head to give Canada a 1-0 lead. After several scoring attempts by Canada, the score remained 1-0 at half.
Sarah Barradas buried a shot in the far corner of Duke’s goal in the 59th minute producing a 2-0 lead for Canada. In the remaining six minutes of the match, Duke put pressure on the Canadian defence scoring two goals to steal a tie.
“The U-19 pool of players is blessed with proud and passionate players. My job is easy because these players want to be coached,” said Neely. “I tip my hat to the players and staff. It was a solid 5-day team effort.”
