Canada wins the Sir Stanley Matthews Cup after out-scoring Greece 4-2 on kicks from the penalty mark. Gerry Gray scores on the winning kick. Both teams had played to a 0:0 draw, with goalkeeper Craig Forrest posting his second career clean sheet in as many matches. The match is played in front of 10,531 fans at Varsity Stadium.

Canada falls 1:2 to Chile in the 1995 Canada Cup final at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, AB. Lyndon Hooper becomes the sixth player to make his 50th appearance for Canada.

Canada wins 2:0 over Netherlands in a Women’s International Friendly match in Roma, Italy. Carmelina Moscato becomes the 21st player to make her 50th appearance for Canada.

Canada wins 1:0 over Guatemala in a Men’s International Friendly match at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. Davide Xausa scores the lone goal of the match. Coach Holger Osieck gets his first win in his second international “A” match on the Canadian bench.

Canada steals a 1:1 away draw with Venezuela after substitute and debutant Gavin McCallum scores his first international goal for Canada in added time.Defender Richard Hastings makes his 59th (and final) appearance for Canada.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 30 May 1971
Canada wins 3:0 over Bermuda in an Munchen 1972 Olympic Qualifying match at the National Stadium in Bermuda. It marks Canada’s first-ever victory in Olympic Qualifying (following a draw and loss four years earlier in 1971). Sergio Zanatta, Buzz Parsons and Frank Schepers score for Canada while goalkeeper Peter Greco posts a clean sheet. After the victory, the Canadian team sings “O Canada” in the dressing room.

Canada wins 2:1 over Honduras in a Men’s International Friendly match in Winnipeg, MB. Paul Peschisolido and Kevin McKenna score for Canada, with McKenna scoring his first (and winning) goal in the 81st minute.

Canada’s women’s U-19 team kicks off the 2002 Canada Road To The World Championship Tour with a 4:0 victory over Italy. Canada will go on to win all nine games in the cross-Canada tour from 30 May to 11 August 2002.

Canada posts a 1:0 win over Cyprus in an away Men’s International Friendly match in Larnaka. Simeon Jackson makes his debut for Canada and scores his first international goal. Lars Hirschfeld posts the clean sheet and becomes the third Canadian goalkeeper to post two wins against a European nation at the international “A” level.

Canada falls 0:3 to Japan in its opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup Korea-Japan. Shinji Ono, Akinori Nishizawa and Hiroaki Morishima score for Japan.

Canada falls 0:3 to Norway in an away Women’s International Friendly match in Sarpsborg. Isabelle Morneau becomes the fourth player to make her 75th appearance for Canada.

Canada falls 2:3 to Brazil in a Men’s International Friendly match in Seattle, WA, USA. Canada twice drew even with goals from Rob Friend and Julian de Guzman, but ultimately conceded the Brazil winner to Robinho in the 63rd minute.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 1 June 1986
Canada plays its first ever FIFA World Cup match at Estadio León in León, Mexico. France’s Jean-Pierre Papin scores the lone goal of the match in the 79th minute. Said opposing coach Henri Michel of European champions France, “you have to admire the Canadian resistance. I was surprised by the Canadian strength in the air and by the fact that they didn’t only defend, but also created good scoring opportunities.”

Canada draws 1:1 with Morocco in a Men’s International Friendly match in Montréal. Carlo Corazzin makes his debut for Canada.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 1 June 1997
Canada wins 1:0 over Costa Rica in a FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Substitute Eddy Berdusco scores the lone goal in the match, Canada’s first goal in five matches. Lyndon Hooper makes his 67th (and final) appearance for Canada.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 1 June 2011
In a final tune-up before the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Canada pulls out a last-minute 2:2 draw with Ecuador at BMO Field in Toronto. Terry Dunfield opened the scoring while Tosaint Ricketts equalised in added time. Captain Kevin McKenna becomes the 21st player to make his 50th appearance for Canada.

Canada wins 2:1 over Ghana at the 1985 President’s Cup in Seoul, Korea. It marks Canada’s first victory over an African nation at the international “A” level. Dale Mitchell and Dave Norman score for Canada, with Norman scoring the first (and only) goal of his international career.

Christine Sinclair sets the national record with her 72nd career goal at the international “A” level. Canada wins 3:0 in an away Women’s International Friendly match in Auckland, NZL. Sinclair scores once in the first half (to tie Charmaine Hooper with 71 goals) and once in the second half. Sinclair’s record-setting goal is scored in the 63rd minute past goalkeeper Jenny Bindon at North Harbour Stadium. Candace Chapman also scores for Canada.
