Sura Yekka has joined Vittsjö GIK in the Swedish Damallsvenskan ahead of the upcoming 2023 season. The 26-year old Canadian has signed a two-year contract with the club and will be a welcome addition to the backline where she can play either at centre back or as an outside fullback.

Yekka comes to Sweden from Division 1 in France where she played for newly-promoted Le Havre AC. She had helped her club win promotion the previous season by finishing first in Division 2 / Group A. Before playing in France, she played for MSV Duisburg in the German Bundesliga.

At the international level, Yekka has made 18 appearances for Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team, including five appearances in 2021 and 2022. She was just 16 years old when she made her international “A” debut in 2013, the same year she was selected Canada Soccer’s U-17 Player of the Year. As a youth international, she represented Canada at three FIFA youth tournaments and won one Concacaf youth medal.

For the 2023 season, Yekka joins fellow Canadian Sarah Stratigakis at Vittsjö GIK, who like Yekka played her college football at the University of Michigan. In recent years, Vittsjö GIK have finished as high as third place in 2019 and most recently finished sixth overall in 2022 with both Stratigakis and Sabrina D’Angelo in the lineup.
