Spain ranks first after FIFA World Cup victory

FIFA World Cup champion Spain is the top-ranked nation in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Spain moved into first after winning the world title with a 1:0 a.e.t victory over Netherlands at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. Runner-up Netherlands has moved up into second place while Brazil, Germany and Argentina round out the top-five nations.



Within CONCACAF, Canada is now the 9th ranked nation. Seven of the top-10 CONCACAF nations all lost points and places on the world ranking as points accumulated in past CONCACAF Gold Cups lost value this month. Canada did not play in June 2010, but did play two matches against South American nations Argentina (0:5 loss) and Venezuela (1:1 draw) in late May.



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year. Matches played more than a year ago are valued 50% of matches played in the last year (matches played more than two years ago are valued at 30% while matches played more than three years ago are valued at 20%).



Within CONCACAF, USA, Mexico and Honduras remain the top-three nations. All three were in action at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Rounding out North America’s top-10 nations are Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, El Salvador, Panama, Canada and Cuba. Canada’s is 100th on the world ranking.
