Pellerud Announces Roster For USA Game

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud today announced the names of 15 players for the international friendly against the USA in Washington, DC on Saturday, April 26. Pellerud hopes to add two to three players before tomorrow’s game which will be televised live on WTSN at 12:00 p.m. ET and then shown on a tape delay on Rogers Sportsnet (Ontario only) on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Because of the last minute nature of this game (with Canada replacing Nigeria on Wednesday), Pellerud has had to juggle his roster selections. Some WUSA teams have refused to release their Canadian players, despite the fact that the US team has all their WUSA players at their disposal.

Because of the last minute nature of this game (with Canada replacing Nigeria on Wednesday), Pellerud has had to juggle his roster selections. Some WUSA teams have refused to release their Canadian players, despite the fact that the US team has all their WUSA players at their disposal.

The CSA and Pellerud have been negotiating, with the support of the United States Soccer Federation, for the release of WUSA players Charmaine Hooper and Sharolta Nonen from the Atlanta Beat and Breanna Boyd from the Carolina Courage. Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc (Boston) has been excused as Pellerud has two goalkeepers available in Erin McLeod and Taryn Swiatek. The San Diego Spirit (who play on Sunday) have released Christine Latham.

Atlanta is set to play the Washington Freedom in a regular season game immediately following the USA- Canada game at RKF Stadium. The Beat has released their US national team players Cindy Parlow and Briana Scurry for the friendly and the Freedom have released Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach and Siri Mullinix. The Courage has released Danielle Slaton and Tiffany Roberts.

Pellerud is also without Notre Dame’s Candace Chapman and forward Silvana Burtini who are both unavailable.

Forward Amber Allen has been called in as well as midfielder Ashley McGhee and forward Rhian Wilkinson. McGhee was on the roster for Canada’s game against Norway on July 17, 2002 but did not play. Wilkinson plays with the University of Tennessee.
