Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud today announced his 18-player roster for the Algarve Cup tournament which will take place in Portugal from March 14-20.

The team will arrive in Portugal on March 7 before playing the United States on March 14, Sweden on March 16 and Norway on March 18. The final placement game will be played on March 20.

Christine Latham, will make her first appearance for Canada since 2001 after missing out last year due to school commitments. Latham was recently signed as a “Discovery Player” by San Diego of WUSA. Candace Chapman is back on the roster following a fall injury, while Diana Matheson, an Ontario National Training Centre product, earns her first call up with the team.

Veterans Kristina Kiss and Randee Hermus traveled to Norway last month for a trial with women’s premier side Floya. The two are close to signing contracts with the club which will see them play in Norway until mid July.

“Following our 10-day preparation camp in Florida, the team is now ready to take on some of the powerhouses in the world,” said Canadian Head Coach Even Pellerud. “After being placed with the mediocre teams before, Canada will now face USA, Sweden and Norway. The group is a strong one, but at this stage we are ready to play anyone. Our ambition is not just to play against these nations, but to beat them.”

Despite the fact that we are heading into our first game in four months, while Norway and USA play their sixth game since mid-January, I have the feeling that my players have the right spirit and the confidence to challenge them. As before we have approached these games against big countries with a defensive approach, we are now determined to attack more and put pressure on our opponents.”

This is the fourth consecutive year Canada has competed in the prestigious Algarve Cup.
