Award recognizes the top save by a Canadian goalkeeper in international play

Canadian soccer fans have voted Milan Borjan’s heroic late save against Mexico as the winner of the 2021 Allstate Canadian National Teams Good Hands® Award. The save, made in second half added time of a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifier at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, helped preserve a historic 2:1 win for Canada and end 2021 at the top of the table.

With Canada leading by a goal, Mexico earned a corner kick which was swung into Canada’s penalty area.  The ball was flicked on to the far post and into the path on an onrushing Mexican attacker who directed the ball towards the open goal. With a Mexican equalizer seemingly inevitable, Borjan dove back across goal to claw the ball off the line and away from Canada’s goal for his defenders to clear and Canadian supporters to breathe a sigh of relief.

The Allstate Good Hands® Award, which recognizes the top save by a Canadian National Team goalkeeper during international play, was chosen by fans during the online voting period which ran from 10 to 15 December. Allstate will now present Borjan with the Good Hands® Award at a future National Team home match.

“It’s been an incredible year for Canadian soccer, and we couldn’t be prouder to be supporters of Canada Soccer’s Men’s and Women’s National Teams and are pleased to part of recognizing the top performances,” said Cheryl Gray, Director of Marketing, Allstate Brand & Consumer Solutions. “Between Canada’s Women’s National Team being crowned Olympic champions and Canada’s Men’s National Team delivering inspiring performances on the qualifying journey towards the FIFA World Cup, the sport continues to grow across the country.”

On behalf of Allstate, we are honoured to recognize Milan Borjan with the 2021 Allstate Good Hands® Award for his incredible save against Mexico in a huge match.”

Congratulations Milan! I know that Canadians are proud of how you represent Canada on the international stage, and we look forward to supporting you as Canada continues its quest to Qatar in 2022.”
