The late Gord Dunphy has been posthumously honoured at King George V Park where the new media booth has been named in his memory. An honoured member of the Newfoundland & Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame, Dunphy was a leading coach and executive who became a leading local figure in media through his “Coaches Corner” column and “Gord Cast” broadcasts.
The newly-constructed Gord Dunphy Media Booth was built just off the touchline at King George V Park in advance of the Canada Games this summer and the National Championships this fall. The naming tribute took place on 12 July just before a league match between St. Lawrence Laurentians and Holy Cross FC with the Dunphy family in attendance.
Dunphy passed away in 2021 after more than 50 years of involvement in the game he loved. He was inducted to the Newfoundland & Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame in 2018 and named an NLSA Honorary Life Member in 2020.
After his playing career, he coached St. Lawrence Laurentians to three provincial titles in the 1990s, helping the double blue qualify for the National Championships in 1993, 1998 and 1999. He helped St. Lawrence finish in third place at the National Championships in 1999 when they were hosted in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
